one question i have about the motherboard. it has two 16x slots. which will both run at 8x if both are used. (as far as i understand)

so, if i have a that 16x graphics card and in the future plug in a 4x RAID controller should everything work?

As far as I'm aware yes, it would run at 16x and 4x. Although the question is largely academic if the 3650 is the graphics card you are using, I can't see it coming anywhere vaguely close to utilising all the bandwidth available even on an 8x PCI-E lane.

ive done a little bit of fiddling. I might as well spend a little more now to get a better machine. I have one question: the cpu has a FSB of 1066 does this mean that the ram must be 1066 too? i lost track of how this all worked... any links to a decent explanation of how it all works? (my google skills have been lacking!)

You don't need 1066mhz Ram to go with a 1066mhz FSB. The quickest way to explain it is that the FSB is quad pumped so for a speed of 1066mhz you require 266mhz from the Ram i.e. 4x266.5=1066mhz. That is PC4200 speeds, while I wouldn't advise that if you might do any form of overclocking the general point is that with a 1066mhz FSB any decent PC6400 will easily do and should be a bit cheaper to boot.

Other than that it looks fine although if you want to overclock more than mildly I might suggest looking into aftermarket coolers as well.

ok, so PC6400 ram is what i want. I doubt i will be overlocking at all, so the stock cooler should be sufficient. Is it quiet?

Something like this Geil ULL PC6400 would be fine for the Ram.

Noise is fairly subjective but when I've listened for the stock coolers on my mates Core2Duo setups they haven't seemed excessively loud. I'd suggest trying it out and if you can't get on with it then changing it.

thanks for your help. thats the ram that i had chosen.

I'll see how the noise is and go from there as you suggest.
