Hi having a really weird issue with my keyboard on a windows 10 64bit PC that I bought 2016, last Saturday my apple keyboard that is 13 years old now and usb wired it is came up with a yellow warning in the bottom right saying the device is unrecognized to windows and the last USB device has malfunctioned, something like that, can't remember the exact phrasing. I replugged it out and back in and worked for a while then again this comes up. Now it comes up each time you plug it in.

So I tried with an even older cheapy keyboard I had in the loft, this worked for a few minutes then nothing, with this one though if I move the wire where it fits in the keyboard it sometimes shows a light so wouldn't you think this is a faulty keyboard. Its just weird to have two keyboards that don't work.

Another thing I should add that last Friday I noticed the American Megatrends screen came up saying no keyboard detected. But it worked all day last Friday so thought nothing of it.

But are these symptoms also what would happen if the usb connectors on the motherboard are dodgy.

Neither keyboard work in any usb port though or even the case usb ones. Mouse is usb and just works fine and external hard drive still work in the usbs I have, so its rather confusing.

Was wondering if it was worth updating the bios, with it saying no keyboard detected is it something here that the latest windows update has altered I was thinking, I read someone had a similar problem and this solved it by updating the bios but that said the latest for my Asus motherboard is 2018 and my version is 2016.

Would you buy a new keyboard, update the bios, or just buy a new PC as it sounds like my motherboard has a usb issue with keyboards.

I would be trying everything that doesn't cost any money first. Try the keyboard in a different USB slot to rule out a faulty slot. Update the motherboard bios (use the flashing tool in the bios not windows based software) in case something has changed plus they are always improving compatability. Try the keyboard in another pc or even a one owned by a friend or family member. If all else fails buy a new keyboard.

Yeah tried it in different ports and nothing, but works when plugged into another computer, could it be a corrupt keyboard drivers, I dunno its weird. I've ordered a cheap £12 keyboard this morning, sadly no more wired apple keyboards made it seems, struggled to see any decent keyboards to be honest on the market these days, most seem to be gaming keyboards getting on for £100 or ones of amazon that people say have these issues, always loved this apple keyboard as not into clunky keyboards.

How do you update using the flashing tool, never done anything like this before. Do I need to buy something extra.

Could be windows issue
Might be worth testing with a bootable live usb
Ubuntu or a windows PE

Update bios
Put bios file on a flash drive
Boot into bios
Look for the flashing tool in bios
Point it/browse to the bios file
Though if your keyboard isn't working you will
Have issues getting in the bios anyway
If it let's you in the bios using the keyboard
That would suggest it's a windows issue
Usb driver or hid driver perhaps

Edit
2016 pc the motherboard battery could also
Be a possibility it can cause unexpected issues
Not just time and date ones

Is the motherboard battery that you mentioned a cmos battery, I did actually replace this last month when I started getting these starting it up going to American Megatrends, I just select F1 and F10 to save bios and it loading, replacing the cmos solved it but do you think it may be a dodgy cmos battery.

I wouldn't have a clue how to do that bios thing you mentioned, not really up on fixing PCs to be honest, only can manage to do basic things and even then fairly useless at.

Yes cmos battery
To be honest if you've had it all that time
And on the same bios
I probably wouldn't worry about updating the bios

Still a good chance it's a windows issue
Nothing unusual for windows updates to cause issues

If you already ordered a cheap keyboard
I would wait and try that
Since anything like trying a live usb
Is somewhat technical

Cheers Mcnumpty2323, hopefully arriving saturday so not long to wait to try it.

Yeah windows updates I've had issues with before, very annoying when they mess things up.

have you tried removing the keyboard from device manager and 'reinstalling' it?

I've found usb3 sockets can have issues with keyboards so usb2 should be used if possible, some motherboards even have specific usb sockets for keyboards these days...

I did try it in all USB ports and also tried removing from device manager and restarted but same thing happened ,just checked always been in a USB 2.0
