I currently have a dell intel celeron 2.8ghz and use my pc mostly for internet use and general programs nothing major, its doing me fine but when multi tasking programs etc its just too slow and i think its time for a new build.
I have never done a brand new build but i have upgraded parts over the years on past pc's so i should be ok.

I dont know much about the products available but i guess the above is ok? im basically after as much performance as i can for as little money as i can. Ideally dont want to spend no more than £550 and need about 250gig space.

I will be using this new build pc to again use the internet (fast loading pages:)) music, general programs (nothing major), and i also will be playing some CSS and would like to get around 100fps+ on a good res and settings.

Could i make this pc cheaper and still get the above?

Like i said looking to spend £500ish, you might be able to twist my arm if its a good spec vs performance and make me spend £600.

BTW on my DELL pc i have a windows XP home licence. If i never use this pc again can i use this licence? Cause the pc is only worth like £50-100 2nd hand, and windows xp home is £65 lol.

Thank you!

Dean

Well aside from the fact that you have specified an AM2 motherboard with a socket 775 chip ;) it would be fine, I'd try to find an extra couple of quid for a Seagate 7200.10 drive if you can as they are faster. I'd also change the graphics card to an X1800XT which would save you money as well plus although I haven't seen the performance of the 7900gs I'd assume it is no better than a 7900gt which the X1800XT easily keeps up with.

As far as I am aware you can use the pre-existing licence provided you are only using the copy of XP on one PC at any one time.

//edit your edit wasn't quite sneaky enough :) I'd keep the Conroe, go for the ASRock mATX motherboard and save up a bit extra if needed but it would be well worth it.

I was thinking more like this one, apparantly the motherboard overclocks better. I'd dump the floppy drive as it isn't all that useful any more, the case doesn't have quite such a powerful PSU but it would still be adequate unless you are going to be overclocking much, in which case the Sonata II is a better bet :)

Opinions then guys???? Think im set on this above spec but not sure about what motherboard to pick? and is the case+psu ok? Or shall i spend the bit extra and get a better case and sepperate better quality psu?!

I also will not be doing any overclocking.

Thank you.

Dean
