For general office use, running quite a lot of apps at the same time, not overclocked and no games. I did post this question yesterday and someone suggested quad core and 4 gb of ram but I'm gonna have to stick to budget.

Any problems or suggested alterations much appreciated. Is the E6570 worth the extra £14? And how come these are cheaper than lower spec chips like the E6700 - is it just that the expensive ones run cooler?

Cheers!

i'd recomend getting a gfx card lol.

better off with a p35 mobo if you're gonna spend that much on one, but tbh , just for office use, just get the cheapest dual core supporting 775 board.

you don't need that faster ram if you're not oc'ing.

rest looks good, although for an extre £30 you could get a 22" monitor.

Think the mobo has built in GFX which is why it was suggested to me.

It is just for office but it gets a hammering with loads of apps open at once. Photoshop, big spreadsheets, a few instances of firefox and IE, access etc etc

Well spotted on the monitor. I think I can stretch an extra £30 for a 22" (the budget begins to grow once again...)

well if you're doing a lot of multi tasking, maybe worth considering more ram, esp. if you're gonna be using vista.

Was thinking of sticking to XP as a) I already have it and b) I know everything works and where everything is on XP. Don't like to take any risks as this is my main PC for my business and cant really afford any downtime due to operating system woes.

Can I put 4 gig ram in with XP?

well it will only see 3gb of it, unless you have the 64-bit version. also it's not so important to have loads of ram on xp, because vista uses like 500mb ram just on the desktop.

besides you can always start with 2gb, and then upgrade later if you feel the need.

Right ok, cheers. Think I'll stick with the 2gb for now, I can always buy another 2gb if I upgrade to 64 bit Vista.

What about the speed of the ram, will it make any difference if I'm not overclocking? ie. Should I just drop down to GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC5300C4 667MHz Value DDR2 Dual Channel Kit (GX22GB5300DC) for the sake of a tenner?

well you may aswell. you won't see a huge gain from having faster ram, because 800mhz - 400mhz effective, is more than you're fsb.

And I've just remembered, if you get a 1333mhz cpu, you will need a 1333mhz fsb mobo, ie. a p35 mobo.

but then u'll need a gfx card so get a g31/33 mobo, not sure if oc selll em.

hold on i'll spec up summit for you under £500 or i'll try.

the mobo you origanally specced does not have built in gfx, nor do any ocuk boards. you might want to double check the psu is adequate to. keybaord and mouse is just what ever you like really, desktop combos are usually better value though.
so this is what I've come up with.

Nice one cheers! Gonna have a good look over that but it looks good at a first glance. How do I check if the PSU is sufficient?

there's a website you can do it on, where u fill in ** specs and it tell u the minimum power needed. google it ive forgot the name of it.

sorry, dont wish to but in yantorsen, but you said the board he chose at first doesnt have on board graphics...it does.As do all the micro atx 775 boards that OcUk sells..

All of them have onboard graphic solutions, may well be pretty carp, but still if your noy playing games then its a cheap solution..

I'm confused again now! Came back to this thread to place my order but now more info!

I figure I have about £260 to spend on 2 gb ram, processor, mobo and GFX (or mobo with integrated GFX)

How about...

GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC5300C4 667MHz Value DDR2 Dual Channel Kit (GX22GB5300DC) GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC5300C4 667MHz Value DDR2 Dual Channel Kit (GX22GB5300DC) £34.99

Or would I be better with a 1066 or 800 FSB chip? Just seems like the
Intel Core 2 Duo E6550 "LGA775 Conroe" 2.33GHz (1333FSB) is a lot of bang for your buck even if it does require a more expensive mobo

oh ok, my mistake. IF that's the case then it will be more cost effective to get a board with onboard gfx, although the mobo and gpu i speced would be more or less the same price, but have better gfx performance.
