Hi, Ive got 2GB of Corsair VS 5300 but im thinking of fitting some heatspreders, would this void the warranty as there is some stickers on the actual dimms, which would obviously be covered. Also how are heatspreaders fitted, are they attached with some sort of tape/adhesive and can they be removed without ripping/removing the stickers on the DIMMs.

Thanks in advance, Ben

i belive some just slide over top and then you push two metal clips over top of them wich are kinda shaped so they push down and inwards on the spreaders so t hey drip the ram/ as for warranty not sure. if you take the stickers off then i would say yes warranty is voided.

Thats ok then if you know which exact kits fit like that then that would be great. Thats why i was woried if they fit via tape because if i had to remove them it would take the stickers with it.

Really, in order to fit heat spreaders properly you should remove all stickers and clean the chips with TIM cleaner.

However it's not all doom and gloom as heat spreaders do almost nothing other than look better. I would guess that they might help with active cooling but if I were in your situation I would just get some cooling over them and keep your warantee :D

You should be alright to up your volts a bit too.

Check out this thread if you haven't already seen it. I'm not sure if bare chips will remove some of the advantages of active cooling but it's bound to be much better use of your money.

Thanks a lot for the advise Nutbusta I was thinking of getting that OCZ cooler and some heatspreaders but i was worried about the warranty, does anyone know of any spreaders that dont use thermal tape and just clip on or something their pretty cheap things so with a OCZ cooler i suppose its worth a try only if i can find a way of attaching them without tape etc.

Thanks, Ben

if you're going to have a fan blowing on the chips, then you dont really want a heatspreader as on ram they're just plates, and dont really increase the surface area for cooling much at all.

and i would personally say that a fan and no heatspreaders is much better than a fan and heatspreaders.

back in the BH-5 days people were actually removing the heatspreaders as they never make perfect contact and just let the heat stagnate and sit around the chips.

Thanks a lot sidewinder, you've saved me a tenner i'll just buy the ram cooler and leave the chips bare without spreaders.

Thanks, Ben
