Does VGA support 1080p?

I'm building a PC for a friend using some older recycled components to keep price down.

He has just announced he would like me to put in a blue ray drive and for me to enable it to be hooked up to his HDTV so he can watch films in 1080p

The 8800GT has DVI output and the TV has HDMI input, it also has an input for VGA with an associated audio 3.5mm jack input.

If I go DVI to HDMI via an adapter cable, how do I get the sound there? as there is no associated 3.5mm jack with the HDMI input. I know I can take a 3.5mm from the mobo to the 3.5 associated with the VGA but the TV sees this as a different input uption so will not combine.

My only other thought is to go DVI to VGA via adapter, here I have solved the sound issues, but I don't know if VGA supports 1080p?

Help appreciated.

VGA does support the resolution 1920x1080.

However you possibly will run into problems with future blu-rays over VGA as VGA doesn't support HDCP.

He's best splashing a £30 on an HTCP GFX card that can do audio over HDMI.

Cheers for the advice, he would also like to game, though obviously not at very high res, can you reccomend a card please

I may be wrong on this so please check it out but i think certain tv's cant show 1080p via VGA they can only show 1360 x 768 maximum or something similar. please check may be it will say in the tv's manual. do you know what model of tv it is?

Im currenly using an 8800gt for gaming at 1920x1200, copes well enough. Also use it for blu ray playback on a 24" monitor.

can you use anyDVD HD to play blu-ray over VGA though? That should work shouldn't it?

+1 for the cheap gfx card though. It'll use a lot less power too. ATI 4350 can be had just over £20 with HDMI, and it will pass audio over HDMI too.

you could just buy a dvi to hdmi adapter for the gpu, you can get them for like £2.50 :)

edit: re read original post lol looks like you already thought of that, a 4850/4870 like someone mentioned above would be fine
