As the title guys. Someone told me that Vista (Indeed XP too) will only support two cores. If you want to run the 3rd and 4th cores on top of that then it's extra $$$$. Anyone confirm this?

Sorry if this question has already been answered.

Steve

Windows XP Home will only work with one socket (e.g. 1 x quad) at a time regardless of its cores or threading potential, and XP Pro will recognize up to two sockets (e.g. 2 x Quads, 8 cores)

Same goes with Vista, only Vista (Business, Enterprise, Ultimate) supports more than 1 socket.

So the answer is Yes to your question, but so does XP Pro & Home.

XP Home is actually limited to 2 logical cores. Vista doesn't limit logical cores in any way on any western edition.

I've not tested myself, but have read in several places, (including a press release from intel) that XP Home supports all 4 cores of a Kentsfield processor just fine.

Microsoft themselve officially announced a long time ago that the license was per socket, not per core. I suspect that either servicepack 1, or 2 removed the 2 core limit on XP Home. The socket limit still applies though.
