does watercooling GPU void your warranty?

im planing to get a x1950 or x1900 and watercool it, i've heard that if you take the stock HSF off then you void your warranty. how do they know if you've taken hsf off, is it got a seal or they check the type of thermal paste you used???
also the Zalman VGA RAM Heatsink are easy to remove just in case u need to return the card?

I would have thought that so long as you put the heatsink back on they would be none the wiser
