Does Windows 8.1 disc allow Windows 10 update?

So I have a Windows 8.1 disc from my build from 2014 and it looks like I'm about to make a new build. I have Windows 10 on that build now via free update.
I understand the update isn't officially available anymore but can I update to Windows 10 once I install 8.1 via disc (only option) or would I have to buy another o\s again?
My 2014 build is currently having problems (no display despite turning on and no MOBO leds on etc) so probably biting the bullet and building new.

If it's activated with a digital licence now (likely is since you did an upgrade originally) then you should be able to just reinstall 10 and it'll activate fine.

How do I go about it? I mean I have no access to my old PC at the moment as I think the MOBO has died and won’t be replacing it etc. Do I still need to insert the disc into the new build ?
Hopefully you understand what I mean

I've installed Windows 10 on quite a few machines using Windows 7 and 8 codes (one only last week).

Clean install Windows 10 and enter the Windows 8 licence code when it asks for the Windows 10 licence code. It should activate.

I understand but how do I clean install windows 10 from an 8.1 disk? Won’t I need to install 8.1 first via disk on new system/ssd and then update to Windows 10?
Cheers for the replies

You don't. You download the Windows 10 installer from Microsoft and use that.

Thanks for the patience and replies. I probably sound like an idiot and I’m missing something haha but I won’t have another PC to use the installer if my current build is dead. I mean ...to access the installer on a new build I’d need an O/S wouldn’t I to download it in the first place.

Yeah, that'll throw a wrinkle in the plan. Got a friend with a PC who you can bribe with money/chocolate/frosty cold alcoholic beverages to let you make a Win10 USB install?

If you have absolutely no access to another PC then install Windows 8 from disk (I wouldn’t bother activating it). Then do a clean install of Windows 10 using the installer you’ve created. Don’t try to upgrade from 8 to 10.

^^ both options probably viable. So I can just buy a random usb pen put it in somebody else’s PC. Use my Windows code to download 10 installer on to it and then once new build is “built” just throw the usb pen in it?

Should just be a case of USB pen in borrowed PC - download Media Creation tool - run tool to create Win10 installer on USB pen. Then when you install it on rebuilt PC use your Win8.1 key. If it pitches a fit at that then install 8.1 from disc and use the USB pen to upgrade to 10 once you're up and running.
