Simple question;

Does Windows reformat your HDD when it's re-installed? I need to know this as I am currently transfering a hard drive from one computer to a new one.

Thanks.

you can just tell it to overwrite your current install, but you'll have a lot of mess on your hard drive

best bet is to copy all the data you need and do a format on the drive

Could I make a seperate partition, put all the files I want to keep on it, reformat the rest, and reinstall Windows?

yes, using something like "partition manager"

...many people just add the orginal drive as a slave,
and install windows on the new drive.

there is an option to create a partitioned drive when the O/S is first installed
