you will be able to open 07's doc files with word 2003 indeed

yes very true, but then they would be 03 doc files and not 07 docx files.. and the op wanted to know if 07 files would work..

I know thats rather.. silly (whats the word?), of me to say that.

(btw if you are going to be transfering from 07 to 03 regualry, set the default save as .doc - so you dont need to keep changing the box every time.)

I doubt his school will have the 2007 compatability add-on for 2003, so he would almost definately need to save his files in the 97-2003 format at home every time he wanted to take work in to school to view.

Word 2007 saves files as .docx - an XML format that can't be opened by default in 2003 (which uses .doc) for example.

The only risk you run with running Office 2007 while you do your school work is that one day you may 'forget' to save as the '97 - '03 format and then take the file to school on deadline day and find you can't print it off ;)

Office 2007 does however have an option to always save files as 97 - 2003 format :)

As people say - if a file is saved in 2003, it will work fine in 2007.

If a file is saved in 2007 in the docx format, it will run in 2003 only if the compatability add-on is installed, which is unlikely at school.

If a file is saved in 2007 using the .doc option then it will open fine in 2003 with or without the add-on.

ok so could i get it to save as .doc as default and bypass all problems?
