if you look at http://www.dofus.com/uk/mmorpg/pay.html it says

non-members:
Village of Astrub only
(5% of the total surface).

I used to play it ages ago back when it first went live. Think it was similar back then, if you don't pay you only get to play around the starting city which was quite restrictive.

i played it quite some time ago for a week or so, the turned based combat wasnt to my liking.
