On the road....
Our 10 month old German Shepherd has apparently become obsessed with our new cat, we picked it up yesterday, she's 6years old, with only 3 legs (car accident years back), the dog, previously used to four cats that lived with us at our old address now seems fixated with chasing this one at every chance.
This has culminated today with it lunging at the cat whilst my wife was holding it, understandably, it's dug it's claws into her, piercing her lip, cheek and deeply scratching her head. Not the cats fault, but what to do about the dog?

The cat is placid toward us, not afraid of the dog itself (came from a home with two Staffies) but is being harassed constantly by an otherwise placid and friendly dog, as I say, a dog already used to cats.....

Any (serious) suggestions as to how we can stop this behaviour would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Spray gun. Taught my new dogs to leave the cat alone. Just water nothing nasty.

Standard firm "No" then turn your back on the dog.

Do you still have the 4 cats or is the new home your dogs territory?

When I had dogs and cats at the same time, all it would take was for the dog to get too close then it got 4 claws across its nose and never harassed the cats again :D

Understandably? Disagree. It clearly is afraid of the dog.

I've nothing useful to suggest other than get rid of the cat.

It's a cat.
It has three legs.
The dog was there first.
He sees weakness, he is asserting his authority.
Clearly he sees threat, or a need for a dominance and showing pack leadership.

Get rid of one.

This is what happened with my mum's cats/dogs.

This really.

Your dog is still very young and his curiosity will dwindle over time - especially when he gets a few claws in the face :) We have a 6 month old lab/newfoundland mix and 4 cats (including a kitten) and he's obsessed with them. He just wants to play, but of course he's just a big blundering oaf to the cats and they put him firmly in his place. It's hilarious when the kitten loads up a paw and challenges the dog to take a step closer

As long as he just seems curious/playful and isn't being aggressive, I'd just let them sort it out.

Spray gun seems a good plan, we'll get one.

And no, the four cats stayed in our old town so yes, the dog perhaps views this as her territory although the yappy bark she gives makes me think it's more "wants to play" as opposed to invaded territory tbh...

Thanks for the sensible advice!

Probably why she's so interested in putting the cat in its place then. Persistence is key its not a quick fix. After a while you might even enjoy spraying the dog haha.

After a week even seeing the spray gun will be shock enough to stop her in her tracks.

There are a few more extreme methods but lets not mentally scar the pup just yet :D
