Dog Proofing a Car?

So, we're due to take delivery of our first Motability scheme car within the next few days. A Peugeot 5008 as I needed the size for my wheelchair etc and getting a winch fitted. My concern is my dumb lurcher. He has really bad separation anxiety so has to travel with us, basically everywhere. As such there's going to be a lot of wear and tear from him and I'd like to keep the new car in as top condition as possible for the 3 year lease. So, any suggestions on how to dog proof the car as much as possible?

You can get custom fit boot covers that cover the whole boot and include a fold out part which will protect the bumper as the dog gets in and out.

The hardest part of cleaning up my car which I got from my dad (who used it as his dog car) was getting all the hair out of the side walls and back of the seats.

You’ll even get some in the headlining with a big dog, but not much you can do about that other than remove it when you clean.

Something like this (custom fit if you can would obviously be better)

Without a crate this is probably the best you can do, it's what I've done too. You can also get restraints that you can clip around the rear headrest https://amzn.eu/d/5omHOfu

We have two white bull terrier’s whose hair is very short and sharp and gets everywhere. We tried all sorts of protection for the boots of our cars, but the best one we have found is a “Hatchbag”. Top notch protection and not too badly priced, for what you get.

I have an A6 avant and a goldie, he always travels in the boot andf I bought a custom fit liner from BootlinersUK, pretty decent tbh, has lasted really well and does a decent enough job.

He's a pretty good boy and has mostly grown out of his destructive anxiety phase, but I'm painfully aware of keeping the car in as good condition as possible as per terms of the lease. I do still worry about him chewing on or scratching through things though.

Now, fiancée proofing the car might be more of a challenge as she has a habit of scratching them up.

My estate has a rubber boot floor and dog separator guard. Everything stays nice and clean. Just wipe down the rubber mat in the winter. If the boot is plastic lined (No carpet surfaces) then it is even easier. Although one of those lint remover tools will get rid of any dog hair in the boot.

I used to head up the pricing team at Motability. I believe it was incredibly rare for any penalty to be applied no matter the state of returned cars (and even for those rare cases then removed on appeal) so I wouldn’t worry too much assuming you’re taking some steps to minimise it :-)

This is not a guarantee mind as I worked there up until start of covid and things could have changed.
