Hey guys and girls Just looking for a bit of advice really.

We have a 2 1/2 year old male chihuahua. Every now and then he would go number 2 in the hall. This was quite rare so didn't really think much of it other than he was desperate. (Never a number 1) anyway. Recently he's been caged as we've had a new sofa. There are 3 dogs in the house 1 is in the cage opposite him and the other in the kitchen (he doesn't do cages). Recently he's started to go no.2 in his cage a lot more often than before like most nights. When he's not in the cage he doesn't go. Anyone had anything simular and fixed it?

Thanks

That breed is notoriously emotionally sensitive. The cage is probably stressing him out, it's abnormal for a dog to do no.2 where he sleeps. Can't you cover the couch or something? Don't keep dogs in cages for extended periods of time.

Agreed.

We're trying to stop them going on the couch unless we say now. He's only really caged at night there's usually someone home. So he has plenty of time out and about

ahh ye olde 'i have dogs but just went to sofaland' dilema,

heres a tip, if you have dogs/kids get a dark leather sofa and they can run riot on it, wipe clean and easily polished.

Why Cage them at all?

Lock them in a bathroom or a Kitchen at night, more space.

Supply a Doggy loo, much like a cat litter tray..

Seems wired to me to give a material possession preference over a living breathing member of the family but there you go, surely as a dog owner you kind of accept the furniture isn't going to stay immaculate forever?

Beyond that the dog is stressed so you need to de-stress it which is tricky as it is probably the cage that is stressing it out. Ty putting an old T-shirt of yours or you other halfs in the cage the smell might reassure the dog.

with our dog his bed is in the kitchen.

We don't shut him out using the door but we use a child's stair gate and this stops him sleeping on the sofa and having free rain of the house when we go to bed at night or go out.

this is also handy if people knock on the door or the post comes and we need to sign for something as well as it stops him going to the door but then he can still see everything and everyone. apart from that the dog is always out in the living room with everyone else.

the missus mum has a little dog too, and leaves it in a cage when there's no-one home.

Bang outta order imho, as above, maybe give them full run of the kitchen/dining room?
Maybe get a dogflap installed too so when they're in the kitchen or w/e they get left over night they have access to outside if needed

We have a cage (well its not a cage, more like a giant cat carrier made from plastic etc) for our 2 Jack Russells, they love their cage, its a big old thing actually could fit 4-5 Jack Russells in it. You could fit a lion inside it, it is that big.
They have loads of blankets and stuff inside. We put our dogs in it at night and lock it shut. They are perfectly happy in the cage.

Actually during the day the cage door remains wide open and they go and sleep inside it for 5-6 hour periods during the day when I'm at my PC in the same room as them.

I think a cage is entirely dependant on the dog and its temperament.

I've seen a few things recently and know a trainer which all recommend cages. Apparently dogs like a reasonably confined space that is theirs and theirs only.

Tell that to my folks. They spent a few grand getting the living room redecorated only for the cats to decide the wallpaper required shredding! Why use the scratching posts when there are perfectly good, freshly papered walls! :D

Make sure the cage is that paricular dogs only bed, and leave the door open and keep away from the other dogs when you're not around so the dog gets used to the crate as a bed.

A a couple weeks should do it, keep the walking routine the same and should soon see a difference when you start closing it when you're not around.

Feed it in the morning, walk it last thing at night.

Also this, I have 3 dogs. We feed them after their morning walk and they get a walk about 9.30pm every day (as well as one at about 4pm).

Many wild animals seek small safe enclosures, a wolf, a direct ancestor of the domestic dog will naturally seek out a cave or secure shelter. Whether they'd be keen on someone rolling a boulder against the entrance when they thought fit I don't know ;). I cage 2 of my dogs at night and they are quite happy.

haha our 2 jacks and our cat all sleep in the cage together too :) The cat does think she is a dog though. Her name is Dave. She is a transgender animal

LOL, i have the same thing with my cats, i often walk in the kitchen to see the dog has been booted out of his bed and the cats have taken it over (we have 3 cats) or i see the dog sleeping in there and the cat squeezed in somewhere.
