Hi all, What headphones would work well with dolby atmos. And would dolby work with a dac
My current set up is bayer dynamic mmx300 with optical into a fosi audio dac-q4. Would a better headset be an upgrade on my headset

tia

ok thanks guys
So basically my current set up wont benefit with atmos because my dac is only 2 channel,
If i connect directly to the on board sound or perhaps a sound card then it may work depending on whether my headphones are good quality, I am thinking a higher end headphone may be much better than the mmx300's but also depending on the person it may be good or not good

Is this correct?

my usage is mainly fps games and I have lots of trouble with directional awareness whilst gaming, sometime I have no Idea what direction I am being shot from, Very frustrating.
Which headphones do you think is best for directional awareness and how would they be set up, in other words with onboard sound/soundcard or with my dac, I like my dac because it is much louder compared with my onboard sound

Any suggestions most appreciated

I think it should still work with optical, I use the Dolby so on Windows with my dt990 and akg702, using 3.5 connector so stereo headphones. I have both the Dolby and DTS app an it takes stereo and makes virtual surround. Obviously not the same as software speaker's but I think it makes a big improvement, both apps on both headphones. With maybe a slight preference for DTS.

I find it's more like it takes the sound from being played in your ears or next to them to further out and away.

I'm not a great FPS player but heard good reviews about both headphones and I find they do make a difference.
I all ready own the ak702 but find the bayers's better quality sound, to my ears anyway. I have seen loads of posts about the dt headphones and am really thinking of seeing if I can get a good deal on some and give them a try. Any owners here who can confirm if surround/direction is good with these
thanks

I tried playing with my Focal Utopia headphones once. It was like wallhack levels of directional awareness. So it is possible to improve that with better quality headphones and dac/amp.

There's various spatial surround virtualisers you could try.

Nothing beats the real surround, though. Still in awe of the wireless Sony HT-A9 system I have.
At £3700 for a set of those I would expect a good sound quality but they are a bit out of my price range ;)

Looks like you're in luck.
This company has customizable HRTF with profile to take MMX300's sound signature into account:
Would be certainly worth of shot trying that 2 week trial.
giving it a go, cheers.

It seems to be working through my dac as well.
I saw a pair of dt990's on the rain forest, 250ohm version for £118, do you think its worth getting them?

Not sure if that Embody Immersion has profile for it, in which case positioning might not be as good as with MMX300.
Though DT990 does really nicely with generic HRTFs.
And as open design (+velour pads) long usage session comfort is at best level with least warming up of ears.

But if it's DT990 "Pro" version, it has coiled cable and higher than "normal" DT990 (but same as MMX300) headband pressure.

Neither can speakers reproduce original sound source distances, or even accurate positions with very limited number of them.
Their sound is still just approximation.
(affected also by room acoustics)
it says it is for all bayerdynamic headphones when you go to the website so I assume it should work

I tried Embody with my dt990, through my ae5 soundcard but direct mode, had to lower the sound to 16bit 48khz otherwise it kept crackling and cutting out, when it was working it seemed ok but to my ears, I couldn't really tell the difference between it and the dolby app. Tried cyberpunk, counter strike and assetto corsa competitzone and it was fine but I don't think I would pay for it. As others said more personal preference really
I have been trying it out on pubg and hell let loose this afternoon and I am liking it,,,,direction off enemy fire seems much better. Just wondering now whether to get a set of dt990s to see if they are better than my mmx330. My dac supports up to 200ohms, does that mean that it will not power the dt900 which are 250 ohms?

Not sure if true, others may know better, but on the SoundBlaster app you can set the gain of the headphones attached and it has three options low 16-31, normal 32-149 and high 150-600ohms, and to me it just sounds quieter if I have it on normal by mistake and just have to raise the volume more than if it was on high, so would think your DAC should be able to power them fine. Also if you can find the 990 pro black editions, they have a straight cable rather than coiled
the ones I see on the rain forest have a straight cable ;)

MMX300 is built on DT770, but can't say if sound is precisely same.
Read somewhere that MMX300 is tuned for little less agressive bass.
Which would be good for distinguishing sound sources of fps games with less of boom from explosions.

Anyway if HRTF algorithm has own profile for headphone, that takes its sound signature into account to maintain best accuracy of positional cues.
So for that aspect DT990 might struggle to keep pace.
Embody's Pro audio package supports multiple Beyers including DT990, but haven't gotten any answer if those are supported in gaming software.

As for non-sound difference DT990 would be more comfortable for longer sessions in warmer room.
While MMX300 has more breathing velour pads than usual badly breathing (p)leather pads of closed headphones, that closed back of ear cup still increases heat insulation making ears warm up more.
According to Immerse gaming page the software supports dt990
