$ dollars in UK layout

i have recently set up a laptop for a freind, and although I've done this hundreds of times, the £ sign is replaced by $, even though I have set it up for UK keyboard layout, etc. Am i just missing the obvious, or has anybody got any ideas? Windows XP Home SP2

double check the keyboard layout....

that's all in can be. infact make sure all regional settings are set to uk.

Did you remove the US layout from the keyboard settings when you added the UK one in? by default it keeps using the US one until you either remove it or set the UK one as default.
