Dom needs a new CPU for I7 system

I'd go with the 920 D0 myself too. That is if it were worthwhile on upgrading my current cpu, but it's not in all honesty :p

That or the 950 if you have to go for the higher CPUs.

Cheers for explaining guys :)

@ sldsmkd your not being rude, should have really had a look, but at a quick glance (only had 10 mins lunch left) i couldnt tell a difference, i guess the other 920 is CO stepping?

Glad you didn't take it the wrong way. Just trying to say that if your gonna watercool you will have to spend a lot of time researching individual components, and it's a lot more expensive, prone to errors and all around difficult than air cooling ;)

I'd suggest picking up a nice watercooling case, such as the Silverstone TJ07, bung an i720 in it and start on air. You can always start watercooling later.

Naah your probs right :)

Going for the Lian LI A71B ;)

Main reason for returning to this thread was to point out that the 6 core i7 chips are coming out eventually. I'm probably going with a 920 D0 then upgrading to a 6 core once they're out.

I'd be very surprised if the 6 core nehalems clocked to the same level as the quads. This was the case when the core 2 quads appeared, the core 2 duos still clock higher than the quads.

I'd be astonished if they do as well, they'll run hotter and ask a lot more of the motherboard. But if we follow the reasoning of the highest clock is the best, I'd still be with my e8400. Multiple cores is the way forward.

Lian LI A71B for watercooling? I thought all the lian li's needed fairly extensive modding. Bear in mind that a 240 radiator is the absolute minimum just for an i7 by itself

Nothing wrong with a bit of modding!

Glad to see someone else going for a case OTHER than the TJ-07 for watercooling...

The coolermaster HAFs seem to be fairly radiator friendly, the 922 can take at least 2 240 rads, and the 932, can take at least a 360 and a 240 all without modding.

Fair enough, the 920 has to be the right choice, you might get slightly more headroom on a 950 or 975, but it will be a small difference.
