Domain Change Issue

Hello folks,

I'm hosted with register1 and all is well but I've tried to change the domain that is associated with the account and I feel I've been given the runaround in terms of the response.

They say:
Each VDS is bespokely created around the primary domain name chosen at order time, as such we would need to delete your current VDS and create a new VDS based around your chosen domain name.

This would result in the loss of all data, users and files, but would give a new VDS on our latest VDS Server with the same expiration date as your current VDS.

I responded saying:
Is there no way to backup the data that exists on my current VDS and reinstate it on a new VDS package - equivalent to something like moving servers.

I can understand the reasons why the domain is an important part of the package but losing all the current data seems like a bit of a drastic step for a relatively simple change.

Their reply:
Unfortunately there is no migration path between VDS's due to the difference in versions.

The other option is we simply alias your new domain to your current VDS, allowing both to show the same VDS Content.

Now on my last host (which was shared hosting), this change wasn't an issue at all. So long as I named the name servers appropriately it didn't seem to be much of an issue.

Is it really that big of a deal to change? I personally can't see why I wouldn't be able to download a backup from FTP and re-upload it onto the new account. The problem is that a database is involved (forum) and I'm not too sure how well that would carry over.

Thanks for any advice.

I think their support guy must have got his wires crossed. Ask for it to be escalated to someone more senior and I'm sure they'll get it sorted it for you.

Edit: Or just take the alias option. Your www entry will already most likely be a serveralias in Apache so there's really no downside to this.

Sounds quite strange - must admit I have never used Register1, but with other companies don't use the domain name in the creation of the VDS (if thats the same as a VPS?!).

I just give a generic hostname normally and then change it and set up Apache with virtualhosts and domain names.

Agree with Adz - I would chat to someone else, unless they are using it as an excuse to bump you to a new server. Doubt that is the reason, just thinking out loud!
