One of our Domain Controllers has failed and we have brought it back to be fixed at a different location.

A new DC was set-up in its place.

Can I bring the broken DC back online in a differnet subnet from where it was originally located and dcpromo it back down to a normal server?

It has been offline for 5 days.

Dont want to cause havok with our Domain

Can anyone give any advice?

Yes you could DC promo it down the way back to a member server, just remember to let the other servers know you've done this if you then want to add it to the domain. I've done this a few times as we have so many sodding domains and DCs.

It should resync though, but I've never been brave enough to try it. I tend to demote it to a member server, remove it from the domain and then readd it and DCPROMO it back up to a DC. Never caused me any problems, but the software you're running on it might not like this.

Depending on what was wrong with it then simply turn it back on, 60 days is the longest you can before it tombstones. If it was fully wiped then it would be best to clean up the meta data before you dc promo it again.

of course, check your sites and services and you should see the server has created new replication connections. If the new subnet is under the same site then nothing has really changed anyway :)
