we have been with a company for 10 years (based up north) and generally speaking they are great - I know some of the people and I can talk to them pretty much anytime during the day.

However they are getting a tad expensive for simple e.mail (pop3) ad a it of webspace and every now and then the whole system goes **** up and it very frustrating as I cannot get hold of them!!!

What do I do - EMAIL is THE most important aspect for me as we have our own server with its own IP address in our loft and I could easily move the domain over there - but e.mail MUST be reliable and less expensive?!?!?

Who would you rec for unlimited e.mail and a tiny weeny bit of webspace please?

I have been a big fan of www.unitedhosting.co.uk for many years. Have never had any problems with them, they know what they are doing, are actually available 24/7 and reply promptly to any trouble tickets or emails you send them.

I have recommended many people to them before.

Another vote for Vidahost, but I have actually used the Google apps approach as well.
Depends if you want Google looking through all your emails or not.

If e-mail is the most important thing why not have an exchange server in house (Perhaps Small Business Server). The initial cost outlay would be recooperated over time and also gives you extra features such as Web Access. SBS with 5 CAL's won't cost much more than £500 as well.

All in house e-mail would then be done locally and copies stored locally so if a PC goes down you don't loose the mail. Obviously add a backup solution and you should be set.

Setup a google apps account, free and very reliable email among other things.

For email I'd agree with this. I have migrated the email from one of my domains over from the hosting provider to this (by changing the MX records) and found it to be very good. This would then give you access to mail from anywhere and not run up your electricity bill by having a server running all of the time.

I've used Vidahost for a couple of years now also and although I'm not a heavy user by any means whenever I've had an issue (often enough me doing something silly or just not knowing) I've been able to email and get a very prompt (usually less than half an hour) and friendly response which sorts it out.

Vidahost it is - called them at 8am (mad I know) no answer and I didnt leave a message - they called me at 10 am - very polite - no hassle - all sorted - brilliant!

I wouldn't trust a home adsl connection if email is essential, personally.

Haven't used any hosting other than my companies for a while but 34sp were fine for me a few years back, very reliable :)
