i'm setting up a site which will feature adult content and need a domain and host where this won't be an issue. Obviously cost is an important factor, but also space and bandwidth are an issue. Anyone know of a host where adult content is tolerated?

Good on you for posting that Muncher, but oh sweet irony, you're wrong :D :D

Provider does not allow any of the following content, or links to such content, to be published on tsoHost's Hosting Systems:

* Content of a pornographic, sexually explicit, or violent nature.

  • Pirated software sites.
  • "Hate sites" or content that could be reasonably considered as slanderous or libelous.

There are definantly hosts out there that allow adult content, but they're few and far between. I don't any of the mainstream hosts allow such things, so you're probably looking at a smaller outfit :)

Edit: Gah, beaten to the punch :p

Hi i have adult sites and a host will soon change there mind once you start the traffic flowing. Plent of shared host oversell there accounts knowing that 99% of the people on the server probably will no even use a fraction of there bandwidth. I have been kicked off a few hosts. I have a dedicated server now with a 10mb connection to the net. What are you planning to do anyway out of interest

Which means that those who intend to use their full allowance are more than welcome to since the capacity is there.

But yes, as with any line of business, if everyone uses product X to its maximum capacity then things break. Even mobile phone networks, for example when London got bombed last year.

That was not a dig, but when you have shared hosting account offering the same or even somtimes more space and bandwidh as you can get with some dedicated servers you know somthing is not right. "100gb space 1tb of transfer $9.99 per month" they close you down even getting small amount of traffic saying you exeeded you max simultaneous connections.

Definitely. But you can't honestly say you expected to push that much on shared hosting.

The larger companies which offer this definitely have such clauses in their T&Cs, more fool those who think they can get a free lunch :)

The most important thing if you have unusual needs is to carefully read T&Cs.

It's an unethical way of doing business, but that's how the industry works. The main things the Average Joe is looking for when he's shopping for some web hosting are the two figures; disk space and transfer. He doesn't go delving into the terms and conditions to see how many CPU minutes or simultaneous MySQL connections he can have without getting suspended; he just sees "100GB space, 1TB bandwidth, $9.95/month"

:(

Average Joe won't be able to use anywhere near those specs. I don't even use anywhere near those specs (most of the time :p)

Pretty much the only people who get caught are the people with medium-sized sites who only care about making money from their site. And I have no sympathy for them.

The one exception is forums...there's a largeish US host which has a vaguely worded limit on database connections and quite a few people have been caught out.

Problem with these large volume hosts is that they don't give a toss about the individual customer and they can barely be bothered to type useful support responses. I've seen too many complaints of this nature and I do feel for Average Joe in that respect.

Nothing wrong with pornographic content in principal, but simply disallowing it is much easier than policing it a) for legality in the UK (on UK servers...) and b) for copyright issues.

I'd recommend looking at servers in europe, depending on what kind of porn you're looking to serve up.

Yeah, I thinkthe best bet would be to find off-shore hosting. Obscure places that aren't advanced legally would be best, i.e. eastern europe+russia, etc.

Why? There's nothing illegal about pr0no and places like that are only associated with sick stuff. Which I'd guess the OP isn't in to.

Copyright issues aren't that bad...illegal music is much more of a problem.

But either way it's a simple case of either customer gets e-mail and takes action or the host gets an e-mail, tells the customer, and the three parties work out the best course of action. In any case, the suspend button isn't hard to press.

The real issue is traffic levels and attacks. Some hosts are just more confident about DDoS threats/attacks.

It's nothing to do with legal issues. Hardcore porn has been legal in the uk for a while. Copyright i dont think so, there is so much adult floating around the images a used on multiple sites, you can buy it for pennys. As i said before i have been shut down on uk and usa shared servers. Two uk hosts who said they dont host porn also said porn was fine as long as it's on a dedicated server. Which is fair enough. I have used over 80gb of bandwidth in the last 4 days.
