Hi Everyone

Just wondering if I can pick everyones brains on my current domain/email problem :) I currently have my domain - www.mehullakhani.com , hosted with uk2.net

However, my webspace hosting and SMTP is with 34sp.com .

I have just recieved my renewal from 34sp.com, and they want £35, which I think is quite a lot for one year of hosting and e-mail SMTP.

I have decided that I dont really need the hosting, as my BB provider give me 250mb anyways, and I only host photos etc - nothing critical.

Most important is my email. My domain is mehullakhani.com, and all I want to do is have an e-mail address, e.g. [email protected] setup so that I can access it via webmail, and outlook - both send and recieve ; so I guess I need SMTP ?

Can anyone recommend someone who can do this ?

Transfer your domain to 123-reg and make use of email forwarding. You could then forward your email too a gmail account and use smtp and webmail that way. Failing that you could setup an email server at home if you can sort out the relevant MX and address records on your domain.

I agree. It doesnt take more than £50 to have a nice little mailserver running :D I've done this myself (along with a few other little services, http, ftp, ut2k4 :D ) off a celeron 1.4 with 256sdram. Nothing beats the control you get being in control of your own server, no restrictions on file space or what type of files can be hosted (i.e. php web hosting that blocks php scripts  ). Of course, you dont have the support there if you get a 'little' problem ;)

If you intend to go down this route and you DO NOT have a static IP Address, dyndns is worth a look linky linky it automatically updates your IP address and MX headers as your IP changes. Of course, running a mail/web server its unlikely that you're going to be turning it off often enough for the IP address to change that much :D

See my post here for an explanation of e-mail types :)

hi beansprout

thanks for the help on that thread but im still a bit unclear.
MehulLakhani seems to be in the same boat.
as someone said here that they could get email forwarded to a gmail account for example, but when you want to send an email its not going to come from your domain, but gmail.
i really cant get my head round this, sorry.

matt

As someone said earlier in this thread, you just need a standard hosting account or, say, make use of 123-reg.co.uk's e-mail fowarding (BUT I don't know if that lets you send from the address, I can't find much info on their site - ask them) :)

I bet the cost of running a pc 24/7 for a year is far greater than the 35 pounds he's paying to 34ispwhatever.com
Not when I don't have to pay the leccy bill ;)

Hmmm... I estimate that my server draws about 100w. So that's 2.4kW hours per day. * 365 that gives 876kW hours per year. Now, these charges (ooh pun :o ) may be horribly wrong because they're just the values we used in Physics at school - I wouldn't know since like I said I have nothing to do with the bill. However, let's assume a charge of 8p/unit (please correct me if someone has a more accurate approximation).

So, 876 * 8 = 7008p per year = £70.08 per year. Wow! I could add in all my FAH borgs but that would be horribly off topic.

In conclusion, @ MehulLakhani or anyone else wanting hosting of some sort, then unless you don't pay for the electricity or have a strong desire to learn a bit, paid hosting it probably 4tw. Not that I'd agree of course.

Hope this helps, null :)
