I am having some trouble trying to get rid of an orphaned domain, can anyone help.
the set up is like so
domain.com - with domain controller
child.domain.com - with its own domain controller

the domain controller for the child domain took a dump about a year ago, and we where not bothered, we just moved the users on our main domain.
But the problem we have is we can not get rid of this child domain anyway i try.
I dont want/need the child any mroe and i think that is screwing up with me trying to make a 2003 server a domain controller as i am trying to go to 2003 as it says my forest prep hasnt been ran, when it has on my remaining domain controller.
Anybody got any ideas how to get rid of this child? I tried using ntdsutil and get errors when trying to delete it :(

Cheers

ok if i do this on the controller for domain.com will i get the option to bin the one for child.domain.com ??

Ohh i ment to say the existing controllers are on 2000

hmm ok so i managed to get rid of it using a combo of ntdsutil and ADSI edit, but still when i try to run the promo on my 2003 machine it says i haven't ran forest prep

Run forest prep again, just to be sure, and then domain prep if it will let you (might be getting confused).

got it after phoning MS about it.
What it is is if you are using Windows 2003 R3 disks, you need to run adprep /forestprep from disc 2 also!!!!!!!!! yet MS dont tell you that.
I guess the upside is i got rid of an old domain and old domain controller rattling around :D

Thanks anyways guys

You mean R2? ;)

And yeah, lovely things undocumented features. Mind you, I may have found it had you specified R2 :p

Off topic sorry :) , is r2 the replacement for striaght 2003 or does it run along side as it has a few extra bits and bobs.

We just built a new member server (nothing special) and the media was r2.

Yeah r2, whoopsie lol
R2 seems to be the new OEM kits they are sending out, only just recently started it aswell.
I honestly dont know what all the differences are, havent looked into it yet

R2 is a right pain. We tried to domain an R2 server to a non R2 server and it wasn't having any of it. Couldn't find any details on Microsofts website about these kind of problems.
