Say if I had a website for a few years called a business name for example
Bobsbakery.xxx (not real btw) would there be any real advantage in buying domain names and pointing them to the site for example bestbakery(town name) etc like things people would put in search engines or would that not impact Seo that much

Just pointing another domain to your primary one does next to nothing for SEO. There's no content behind bestbakery, it's just a redirect, and if it's set up correctly then Google should recognise bobsbakery is the canonical version. Ultimately you'd be better off optimising pages on bobsbakery for the company+town name.

The only real reason to do this is if people are having trouble typing bobsbakery.

Unless you're hosting a site on the domain it won't affect SEO. Some companies do it to protect their brand but with the number of TLDs available it becomes expensive.

In short, it's not really worth it. If you promote the URL outside the web and business cards (e.g. shop fronts, vans, etc) people who might have tried to remember it will likely forget and in these instances it's probably worth getting the .com and .co.uk if you can. Beyond that it's rarely worth it.
