Domain names and hosting

I currently have my website hosted with Register1. Very happy with the service and all is good. However I used to have my site hosted with Easyspace. Wasn't happy with their service, which is why I moved away. The site is now hosted with register1, but tyhe domain was owned/controlled by Easyspace. The domain is about to lapse so I need to renew it. I have asked for the code to transfer it to someone else. Now do I;

Move it to Register1 and have everything controlled by 1 company

or

Move it to an independant company, and if so, who?

Register1 are perfectly good for domain names, you might as well just move it across to them.

Cool beans. Have put in the transfer request. What sort of downtime should I expect while it transfers?
