Domain Names - can they sting you on renewal?

I'm about to purchase some domain names for a new business venture and want to know whether these companies can hike up the charges further down the line?

I ask because its £10 for a year and £100 for 10 years; i don't want to buy 2 years now then 2 years down the line they are asking £50/year for example.

Does anyone have any experience here?

My mind tells me i should just go for the ten years just in case.

they won't hike up the price.. paid 7.99 last year paid 7.99 this year.. the price might change in pennies but nothing major..

Aslong as you don't go with some kinda cowboy outfit shouldn't change massively, I've paid the same amount so far for the last 5 years.

thanks guys - who are you with? I've used 123-reg before but GoDaddy seems to be ~£3 cheaper/year

I buy all my domains via NameCheap.com

Prices have gone over the last 6 or so years from something like $7.99 to $9.28 ** - absolutely nothing to worry about.

** Figures picked from the air to show that I mean a small increase over the course of 6 years **

Either go with someone reputable: Domainmonster, Namecheap, 123-Reg, Dynadot etc who will give you full control of your domain without any sneaky T&C's or read the T&C's carefully as some companies like UK2 make it a real pain to transfer away and will charge you £12.99+VAT if you have been with them less than 2 years.

I have used 123-Reg for many years on multiple domains and never had a problem. Price has pretty much stayed the same. Any reputable company would get hung by a registrar if they held you to ransom on a domain you had registered. If you let it lapse and go into public domain again it could however be a different story, even then though you still retain some reasonable claim to the domain depending on it's usage.

i also ended up buying .net, .org and .info domains for £9/year :-)

I get most of mine from Simplex, I just haggle the prices anyway xD

Verisign who run the .com registy have been putting prices up over the last few years, but typically only a few tens of cents at a time.
