Can you do this?

I'm interested in doing a blog about where I work (and it's not a 'slagging them off' type one!) some others do the same in various departments. But they use their own name (some have books published so no point being annoymous).

But. Myself. I'd rather not use my name, just don't see it being relevent. I know from previous experience you can hide your home address on the nominet form, but it always shows your name. Is it "ALLOWED" to use a different name on there?

Gosh this is a long 'arse about way' of asking a stupid question.

Any help most appreciated! :)

For UK domains I thought that if you are a 'private individual' you can have your contact details blanked out of the WHOIS details.

You can have your address/contact details blanked out, but not the "registrant name".

You could have course do the WHOIS opt-out register the domain with the registrant set to "UK organization - other" and set the name to a made-up name of some organization... e.g. XYZ Society. Of course, the registrant is technically the legal owner of the domain, so if you think the domain might be important to you, be careful of what you put there.

Where did you buy your last domain(s)?

It seems I spoke too soon... Daily.co.uk will hide the address but not the name, my old host still have my name there however the domains I have registered with dreamhost just list the domain name in the name field, so if you want to hide it dreamhost might be a good bet.

Hmm so if I did that, and someone created a company/organisation called '<whatever> society', they could take my domain!?

You can add "Domain ID Protection" onto a domain if its a .com

Some offer it free or at a small extra charge per 12 months.

For a .co.uk domain do as daz suggested. You can login via your NOMINET control panel/login and make the required changes from there. But be careful, bunging false info in there could in theory, result in the domain being removed/taken offline ( only if you get found out which is unlikely ;) ).
