I was looking for a quick bit of advice on something.

My business has about 6 domains registered. (All variants on .COM)

Currently we have our domains registered with 1&1. We had an issue recently where we lost our email and then our website for about 1 day each. The error was on my part but dealing with 1&1 support made it harder to get resolution.

Our domains are expiring in 10 days and I was going to move them to someone else with UK based support should we ever need it. Can anyone recommend a good UK based company to do this?

Also, if we move our domains how do I go about ensuring we don't lose email or web presence during this? We have hosted exchange and a website which I need to make sure still get pointed at correctly.

Note : Please assume I am a complete doofus in this area and assume ZERO knowledge.

Setup a new hosting account with your new provider in readiness.
Before the transfer, set up your MX records to point at your hosted exchange.
If someone elses hosts your website, set up the DNS A record to point at the host
If 1&1 host your website, back it up and then back it up again. Upload it to your new hosting company. If you have a CMS or MySQL, prepare to get your hands dirty getting your website working again or get someone in do it.
Make sure your the admin and technical contact on the domain, when you do the transfer you'll be emailed an unlock or transfer code to give to your new host.
By getting your MX Records and DNS A records set up in advance, you should have little or no downtime on your email.

However one thing to check, can you transfer your domain (I dont mean hosting) so close to its renewal?

If you are changing your DNS records soon, change the TTL to 1 hour now.

That way you wont have people with cached incorrect records for however long your current TTL is.

Just remember to change it back a couple of days after you've confirmed it's all working OK.
