Hi there,

Forgot most of the stuff i used to know on these, just to clear up.

It doesn't matter where the domain is right as it is simply a pointer, so its ok to just go with the cheapest i can find, even if it is in the US?

For hosting, get decent, recommended, uk hosting as that's what controls the speed of your site? was thinking of going with tsohost or qiq.

How do i test roughly what the speed will be for my site from my area? Ping the server?

Thanks.

Yeh any reputable domain registrar will be fine. GoDaddy is a popular overseas one.

I personally use US hosting as it works out a little bit cheaper, but if you need the best speed/response from the server you are best off going with a UK host.

Most webhosts will have a test file you can download from their servers to test your speed - best fire off an email should you want to try that.

You say "reputable" for domain registrar.....I am wondering what could go wrong with domains? I mean for hosting, it could go down etc....what could go wrong with domains - i thought they were all managed by nominet (sp?) or something like that?

Also - is there anyway i can be locked to a particular domain registrar at all? I mean i can switch domain registrar at any point right? (although there might be a transfer fee?)

Well some hosting providers who also provide domain registration services have been known to use their own details rather than the customers - so the company retains the rights to the domain.. a little naughty, but it does go on. If you are registering it yourself, you should have none of those issues.

Yeh I think you can switch it easy enough, perhaps for a fee but I don't think it's too much.
