Hi

Right, don't laugh.

I have two domains registered under Register1. One is for my own use as a messing around thing and the other is under the name of a project I am aiming to be serious about.

I have hosting seperate, 5quidhost are the providers.

The aim is that I want these two to be virtually seperate. One will have daft stuff like holiday pics and so on, while the other will have content delivered by Moodle. However, I want a different splash page and so on for both.

Using the CP (control panel, not the Gary Glitter type of CP) I can see that there are controls for sub-domains.

I am lost, can somebody, in a nutshell, expalin what is the best way of going about this and also the most secure. I don't want my personal one associated with the 'professional' one.

I know next to nothing about this stuff and not pretending I do. I can, however, use Moodle and install it on to the webspace.

Many thanks.

so on domain1.com you want 2 sites so what you could do is create a sub domain for each splash page.

Example sub1.domain1.com | sub2.domain1.com

Sub1.domain1.com folder called Sub1 = holiday pics e.t.c
Sub2.domain1.com folder called Sub2 = moodle content

Get me?

Yes, that sounds cool. Now, to muddy the waters the CP allows 'Addon Domains', with the explanation :

"An addon domain allows you to reach a sub-domain when entering the name of the addon domain into a browser. This means that you can host additional domains from your account, if allowed by your hosting provider."

So, if I am reading this correctly, I can avoid the whole 'subdomain' thing and therefore having my personal name included in the 'domain1' part?

As you can understand, I really don't want my personal name used as it looks a little naff and may attract unwanted attention. I am a faily ICT literate lecturer who wishes to develop distance learning seperate form my work's proceedures. a private project to be used as a portfolio, if you like.

I appreciate your help so far.

What I want is:

www.myname.org.uk - points to my carcrash of a site.
www.mynewlearningsite.org.uk - points to my Moodle site.

Again, many thanks.

An addon domain is used when you own another domain and you want to add it so you don't have to pay for 2 webspaces.

Lets say domain1.com is your main site and it allows addon domains you could add domain2.com to your existing setup but this will point to a subfolder in root. For example domain1.com > root/ | domain2.com > root/ > domain2/

Hope this is all clear.

In this case what your looking for is an addon domain so using the method above it would be www.myname.org.uk to root/ | www.mynewlearningsite.org.uk to root/ > mynewlearningsite.org.uk folder.

Catch my drift?

Remember: A sub domain is LIKE www. part of the website so you could have site1.domain1.com or site2.domain1.com.
Remember: An addon domain allows to point a new url to a sub folder of main site domain1.com > root/ | domain2.com > root/ > subfolder

Hope this helps.
