Any opinions on what Corsair RAM is better? Dominator vanilla or Vengeance? There will be some overclocking done.

For overclocking?

If both are the same timings and speed and if you're not ocing the RAM (say in a SandyBridge setup) would there be any point at all in paying more for something that's not going to be OCed?

I have Vengeance 16GB and i5 @ 4.3GHz, I've never really need any real world benefits in OCing RAM, more CPU/GPU :p

I didn't suggest the Dominator because it will overclock better, I suggested it because out of the two lines mentioned it is without question the more reliable.
It's certainly worth paying more for reliability.
Vengeance is cheap memory, not always the cheapest in terms of price though, just cheaply made. My first impression of Vengeance was of the cheap flimsy plastic heatspreaders, it then went on to disappoint me constantly every single time I had the misfortune to encounter it.

Can't say I've had any problems especially in the capacity I have it in and the system it's being run on!

Good to hear you're not having problems with yours (yet). I'm just saying, in my experience Vengeance is not good memory and I'd advise almost anything else.

Dominator DDR3's fins can be removed also if that helps

Also a nice touch.
With Vengeance the plastic heatspreader often just falls off, both sides come apart to reveal the green PCB memory underneath. At least with Dominator you can remove the fins and leave the rest of the heatspreader on so it still looks decent.

Good to know these things. I think I'll stick to Dominator then. One thing to note, the Vengeance fins aren't plastic, they're alu alloy. But still, a bit silly looking considering the restrictions they could put on a big CPU heatsink.

Really? I've handled hundreds of kits and I honestly thought they were plastic. They certainly don't feel like metal at all.
A quick Google reveals many other people have fallen into the same trap as me. I honestly wouldn't have said in a million years they were aluminium.
My other comments still stand though.
Heatspreaders on RAM like this are pointless as they really don't generate much heat. Most heatspreaders are pretty pointless on DDR3 apart from the older high-end stuff that ran at 1.8V or more, that did get hot, but Vengeance? Not so much. The heatspreaders, apart from looking horrific IMO, do nothing except block decent heatsinks. As above, at least Dominator looks good and the fins are removable.

They're definitely not plastic...

Correct. The spreaders are aluminum. Of course they are not as heavy as the Dominator spreaders but the Vengeance is a lower cost memory option. The memory underneath is solid, just like anything with our name on it. If there's a problem with a kit, we replace it.

Do you really need heatsinks on RAM that's running at 1.5v or 1.65v? All it ever seems to do is get in the way of the CPU HSF. Don't Corsair do the LP stuff? More practical I would have thought.

Can I join the Corsair appreciation society?
