We had a thread on this a while back but since then the game has undergone some changes, a lot more development and a name change. With it getting nearer to to launch I thought a thread might be worthwihle putting up especially considering how much dissatisfaction there is at the moment with the more "wow" designed MMO.

When will Dominus launch?

Dominus is currently in closed beta. We will be making an official announcement in the near future, but we estimate Q2, 2012.

Scifi MMORPG

Dominus is a science fiction Massively Multiplayer Online Game. Its story will evolve over time, but at the center of it all is the interplanetary struggle between Earth and two other alien races.

3 Playable Factions

Ally with three totally unique factions. Whether you choose Human or one of the two alien factions, Rodon or Salent, each has its own perspective on the current events in the game.

Character Progression

Everything you do adds to your overall skill. Start the game as an elite Human, a genetically engineered Rodon, or a nascent Salent and build your character into a powerful avatar.

Huge Universe

Explore 11 worlds with over 25 large seamless areas. Don't be fooled by the beauty of the planets of Dominus. Each has its own mysteries to discover and its own danger.

Massive Battles

Join the struggle for dominance by establishing bases, stopping invading forces and braving war torn planets.

Professions

By specializing in one of 7 professions you can discover new inventions, construct incredible items, develop enhancements, and make your character rich beyond belief.

Missions

Whether you follow the story that develops around you or decide to just explore on your own, your skills will be put to the test with exciting missions.

GM driven content

One of the main attractions of a massively multiplayer game is that you play with real people! Many player encounters are conducted by real players and are not just elaborately scripted events.

Strategic Base System

Establish a foothold for your faction and take control of valuable resources in the game by calling in any one of 7 different base structures. Each structure has a different function in strengthening your factions position. Be ever wary, each of the other factions will take every opportunity to destroy your bases and deploy their own.

Amazing Graphics and Sound

Dominus is designed to look great on most modern PC's. The sound and music is also important to the overall feel of the game and has been done by professionals with many AAA titles to their credits.

Can you describe the class/ability system in a nutshell?

There are 18 classes, six per faction. They are not "mirrored (meaning that a Salent tank - a warrior archetype - has the same skills as a Rodon or Human tank). While all three factions have the same archetypes, and the archetypes do share some skills, they also possess unique skills.

You will choose your class during character creation, and enter the world with five skills. Other skills will unlock as you gain skill points, until you have a total of fifteen. Each skill has ten levels, and there are no limits as to when you can max out the skill, except the number of skill points you have.

There are a total of 1000 skill points to be earned. They are earned one at a time, by filling up an experience bar. Fill the bar, get a point. Everything you can do in Dominus grants experience. Some encounters are tuned to grant multiple skill points if you complete them when you have relatively few points to your name.

Because each new skill level requires more points than the level before it, you will not be able to maximize all of your skills. Maximized skills often carry important bonuses, such as the ability to have the skill affect your entire group.

The ability to reallocate your skill points (known as a respec, short for respecialization) will not be difficult. You will not be able to respec during a battle, or even in the middle of a battlefield. You will have to return to a trainer in order to respec. (Costs, if any, are undetermined at this time.)

A little more detail on some of the more interesting and unique points this game is trying to introduce or reintroduce (as it is heavily influenced with a lot of staff from DAOC)

Bounty Hunting

Overview

KOS (kill on sight) lists scribbled on sticky notes by your computer. Impotent spluttering after someone kills you when you were just running to rejoin your group. Slinking away in defeat, after multiple deaths trying to pry some range abusing cloaker off his perch. None of that is fun. What is fun is placing a bounty on the head of your enemy, and watching your friends vie for the privilege of killing the son of an irradiated invader for you. It's also fun collecting the bounties for ridding the world (however temporarily) of other such nuisances. Which is the most fun? Check out our system, and you decide.
(Today's date is 1/5/2012, and the following description is subject to testing, feedback, and further development.)

Placing Bounties

Place a bounty on anyone through an NPC for any amount (limit of four offered bounties at a time - you can find what you've placed in your mission log). You'll be charged a small fee that varies depending on how long you want the bounty to be active, and the amount of the bounty will be removed from your inventory and held in escrow. You'll get the money back if no one makes the kill during the active period.

Accepting Bounties

The NPC that accepts bounties will also give them out. You can have up to four active bounties in your mission log. Bounty lists show the target's name, level, race, and class, as well as who offered the bounty and when it expires. If one target has several bounties on his head, the bounties will display separately. You may choose to accept several, and receive several bonuses at once when you kill him - but they will all count against your maximum of four in your mission log. Up to ten people can accept a particular bounty at a time.

Hunting For Bounties

If the target is online, the name of the zone he is in will be displayed to you.

Collecting Bounties

Make the kill, get the money on the spot. After you collect, all the other players who accepted the bounty will have it removed from their mission log.

So You've Become a Target

There is no limit to the number of bounties that can be placed on your head.
What Might The Future Hold?

*If* we get the development time, future upgrades to Bounty Hunting may include using those in the Soldier For Hire profession to assist you in tracking down targets, shared missions, bodyguards, reverse rewards (targets who survive the bounty duration get a cut of the bounty) and more.

The developers would like to thank the Dominus forum community for their valuable contributions to the discussion of the system.

Note what I have highlighted at the bottom of this quote, this whole system was developed between players and the dev's through a forum discussion and testing.

Death Penalty

Upon death, a player must be re-cloned in order to enter the game. The player loses time and has to respawn in the nearest cloning facility to where they died. (Other possible penalties, and whether or not there will be any, are still under discussion.)

Of greater consequence is the fact that any harvested resources the player was carrying will remain on that player's corpse, and be lootable by the opposing factions.

It is possible for the specialized healing classes to resurrect the fallen, with no rez-sickness.

A game where death has consequences, not to the old school standard but still you need to be a lot more careful than in most games. Additionally if your gear "breaks" when you die i.e. you haven't kept it repaired it goes for good no matter how amazing it was :D

Crafting

- You can also acquire many schematics from other Expert NPC's or advanced players
-You can also experiment by changing one or more of the components in an existing schematic or by trying your own unique combinations
- Durability - Items have a finite lifespan
- There are ranges even within each quality. One rare item will more than likely have different stats from an identically produced and named rare item
- The skill of the crafter does play a role in determining that final stats on an item
- As a faction progresses, special schematics may be introduced that advances their technology. So it is very possible for one faction to possess technology and schematics that another one does not
here are schematics in the game that will be discovered through experimentation and invention. In other words, the items will not exist in the world at all until the players discover the schematics and create the items

The above are some of the cooler points I picked out.

Bases

http://www.dominusthegame.com/game/bases/

Military bases define the struggle for power in Dominus. As a player, you can directly affect the outcome of this struggle. This is done by destroying enemy bases and deploying your own or defending existing bases. Having bases provides important bonuses and benefits to your faction, and there are areas in the game where access is dependent upon base control. The following is a description of structures required to build a base.

Base idea sounds amazing!

The game has been developed in conjunction with the community. The more regular and helpful members of the forum have been "promoted" to some form of dev role (I don't fully understand it myself as I was offline for a few month when it happened) this how serious they are taking the development.

Read the webbie, game sounds really, really good and if you get involved you can help in shaping its development!

Its in closed beta now but if you sign up (and participate in the forums actively) you will be allowed in sooner rather than later!

Regarding the GM led events, nothing solid yet but this is one of the community "devs" I was chatting too.

There's been no details on it to be honest.

If it's anything like the old UO GM events, they will spawn/create an area, town, epic monsters just for the event, give an on screen set of instructions (Which I guess will be different for each faction) and have a span of X hours to do it. So while you are trying to do your objectives given by the GM, the other factions might have the objectives to stop you or hamper you along their way to victory.

Other GM events I've seen are chained, kinda like egg hunts, you find items and clues to reach the next objective, of course the other factions will be attempting the same so there will be battles along the way, but the big reward would be by finishing the goals more than just senseless killing because you see each other :P

It's the beauty of GM events, it can be anything as they can bend the rules of the game for a small amount of time, they can probably turn off the code that makes the 2 smallest faction enemies and turns them friendly against the biggest one for one night, etc :)

Hoy thread revival!

Can't believe there is no interest in this, a real 3 faction pvp game but there you go! :p

If anyone is interested (and signed up for beta) they are running a free event later this evening to crash the servers. Log in swarm everything and make it crash so they can see how it holds up. Beta should be coming along shortly thereafter.

Looks interesting and I signed up to the beta, but there is nothing to download in the downloads menu.

How do they expect to get people on tonight to test if they dont release a download

They emailed me.

They are letting around 5k players who have signed for beta (not sure if that is all sign ups or they have missed people out) in tonight. The email from Sanya has the link to download everything.

When I get back on the pc I'll drop you a link to the community page.

Hehe :)

Closed beta has been going for ages. This (from what I gather) is the last step before open beta. They are opening in stages though, those with more community activity get in earlier.

It was called Prime and was announced around about a year ago.

Done loads of dev on it since then involving the community (the bounty hunting is the best example) and changed its name etc. I would expect a late spring/early summer release on it. Really excited considering a lot of the team are ex Daoc and they are making this to bring that type of game back to life! <3

Same.

Looking forward to gw2 but this is so under the radar and they are taking the fans opinions so seriously that I really hope it could be great. Nice to see someone give a toss what the fans think rather than telling us what we should play.

ooh, looks rather interesting. In the main I like my MMO's to come with a sword, shield and plate armour but I will have a butchers on the site when I get home.

Any info on the art direction / engine used for those of us that can't access the site at work?

Hell, even how the game runs if peeps are in the beta? :D

To be fair from what I have heard I think the interface is following the MMO standard (aka the WoW interface :p) and I don't think they are pushing for uber graphics. They are going for a solid graphical style without anything special.

Would recomend reading the forums, they are a great read!

As long as it runs well on a mid spec rig, with good animation and a responsive UI I will be happy enough to give it a go :)

Toon animation is probably my main gripe with modern MMO's, why a game nearly a decade old (hi WoW) has better animation than a newly released MMO I will never know...

Any one get in the stress test ? had a good laugh and got stuck in the slime pool outside the human starting building.
The game ran really well on my crappy laptop, i couldnt run SWTOR but it ran this so it was playable.
Hopefully it will be DAoC pvp with SWG crafting :)

I got in and had a good laugh, really good explore and found some fun stuff but be careful about saying anything as it was under NDA.
