I have always liked this song but until I watched this video I really did not know it had so much meaning behind the song.

The whole song tells a story, watch and listen carefully:

I’m not into old music however they simply don’t make music like this anymore, so much time and thought must have gone into it.
Oh and this bit seems to have been missed out from the interpretation

The Levy was actually a bar and music venue in McLean's hometown in Upstate New York which had closed, meaning that the closest music venue was the next county over, Rye County, hence the often misheard line about "...drinking whiskey in Rye...", not "...drinking whiskey and rye..." which makes no sense since rye is a type of whiskey.

They do, you just have to look in the right places :)

Seen an interview with Don McClain, and he also mentioned how the song was brought on by his dad passing away, and how he felt. Those feelings made him remember the day that Richie Valens, the Big Bopper and Buddy Holly died. So it's like a mixture of all those things. Not a bad song at all.

It's one of the best songs evar, and is incredibly deep and full of meaning.

Weird Al's Star Wars cover - The Saga Begins - is also absolutely brilliant.

He was funny in Crackerjack but dunno about his singing though.

That's because with the mass produced Simon Cowell crap we have these days there is no longer any meaning in songs.

We're used to lyrics being bland and generic. :(

I love American Pie - I know the lyrics well enough that if I stumble through them in my head (a couple of times for some verses as it gets a bit confusing), by the time I get to the end I know 10 minutes have elapsed (the actual track is 8min40 I think)!

I'd rock my daughter to sleep singing this when she was a baby. She'd usually be off by the 4th verse but I'd go all the way to the end just to be sure.

As long as I get the forst line of each verse right the rest usually follows.

I sing it to my son now - he's 18 months so I reckon it will take him another 6 months to realise I'm tone deaf and get the verses in the wrong order.

I also sing him various velvet underground songs but I will have to stop those once he can understand the words.

T'is a fantastic tune & Video but of all Don Mcleans Works the best has to be "Vincent" Fantastic song and an extremely well written tribute to the Artist of the same name.

there has never been a time where it has been easier to track down real musicians offers accross all genres and internationally - yes the chart stuff is rubbish but since the charts have existed the pooh has always floated to the surface.

Only a lazy music fan would pine for the good old days - all of that fantastic music still exists and much more fantastic music is being written everyday. The difference is it is now easier to find and listen to than ever. Quit whining.
