Righty, One of my clients has a dell pc (sadly) and an old one at that.. spec:
p4 1.8
512 ram
gf4 ti4800
80gig hdd
generic psu
dunno the mobo
liteon dvd rom
liteon cd rw
The optical drives are not detected in windows and are in the bios.
Also there is a hardware tab when i goto properties of c drive, and this shows up 2 optical drives, but are not displayed in disc management.
Device manager says there is an issue with the driver, which is supplied with windows anyways.. have uninstalled driver, and it gets re-installed automatically but with the same error.
The drives are fine, and have been tested in 2 other pc's without fault. I have also used new ide cables, checked jumper settings, tried each on the primary ide channel, and none of this seems to work.
So i thought windows driver database could be corrupt, so i went to do a repair of xp.. it booted to the disk ok, although took a while, but after about 15 mins of trying to load up the initial files, it came up with an error saying a file could not be loaded, the drive had taken so long as it kept spinning up and down all the time.. but it does not do this in other pc's.
I have also performed full system scans for virus's and spyware, and came back with absolutely nothing! I have never seen a home computer as up to date as this (not from an end users home comp anyways) they already had spybot and adaware, and they use avg, all up to date, same with windows update.
Is there anything else i can try before i try and wipe anything? Or do u reckon i should try and flog them a new motherboard and cpu for the hell of it
(joke)
Cheers for any help
