TP-Link AC600 Dual-Band Wi-Fi USB Adapte

buddy of mine as this dongle and it hitting about 1.6mps downloading games is this about right?

if it is what use adapter should he get instead

Depends on if it's plugged in to a USB 3 or 2 port, how far they are from the router/access point, and the actual speed of their internet. Do you know if the 1.6 is megabits or megabytes? Assuming it's Steam, it'll be bytes, so that's roughly 12.8 megabits per second.

Depends on many things.

I assume he's getting 1.6MB/s not 1.6Mb/s as usually downloads are in MegaBytes not Megabit.

That might be the max his internet allows, in which case an upgrade is pointless.

If his internet is much faster then its worth checking he's using a USB3 port not USB2. A dongle upgrade may help, depending on his what his router supports (no point buying a fancy dongle if he's got an ancient 2.4ghz only router).

yes 1.6MB/s

3.0

and the actual speed of their internet
150MB/s from EE

He's using the EA app, when over ethernet that get about 18MB/s(download).

how far they are from the router/access point
about 10m but also through a floor

Can they use speedtest.net and see what they get from there? For 150mb that seems a tad slow.

EDIT: Might also want to check network properties to see if the adapter is connecting via 2.4 or 5GHz and at what speed too.

when he is plugged in 120mbps, when on the dongle and in the room the pc lives in 32mbps
Either the PC/adapter is too far or something else is holding it back. Did you check the network properties in window to seeing the wifi status? I would imagine being 10m away with a floor in between would force it to fall back to 2.4GHz, which would end up getting around the ~32mb mark.

ill go do that now

it dose show 2.4GHz and signal strength as excellent.

i can find how to change to 5GHz
If you go into the network properties, you should be able to find something like this:

Bare in mind at that distance 5GHz may perform worse, but worth a try.
