I'm off to Donington Park race track on the 26th to watch and photo my mates. Its a open pit day and quite a few people have signed up to race their cars around.

I'll be taking my 350D and hopefully a Canon F4 300mm borrowed from a friend.

What kind of setting should I use to capture the action? Obvisouly the weather is an important factor but hoping its a sunnyish day, what kind of shutter speeds etc would I need?

I've got 2GB of storage so dont mind snapping away, but want to maximise my chances of getting a some good shots.

depends upon the light for me
see if you can get an exposure speed of 125th perhaps?
I think that's handy for panning shots
then work your way down the ISO settings until you can manage this sort of exposure time to get a less noisy image.
if it's sunny, do you have a lens flare hood?
the 26th eh??
I think I'm working...otherwise I'd pop down myself!
bah

The same trackday OcUK meet being organised in the Motors Forum :)
I've been to Donnington before and photo access is pretty limited to either the pit lane or perimeter fences which are quite a long way form the track.

I have plans so can't make it

In regards panning, anything around the 1/250th shutter mark should be good for panning. Get the camera set to AI servo as well.

Shooting places at Donington though, do you know if it is the national circuit or the shorter one?

I find being on the inside of the track coming down through the Craner Curves is good, near where the Spitfire is meant to sit.

On the outside of the old hairpin (bottom of the hill after craner curves) will allow for some really good side on panning shots of cars as you can get above the fence and get pure views of the cars. 300mm will be good for this as well.

Inside of the first corner is a really good place for no fence and slow capture of shots, I do not know how far they are through the refurbishment of the pits at Donno though so you might be restricted here.

Look forward to seeing the photo's :) If I had my telephoto I would have popped down myself.

Thanks for the replies :)

Tom - I'll only probably be taking pics from the pit lane, so mostly I'll be after shots of they coming down the start/finish straight or round the last corner.

I'll try and get to other parts of the track!

If you can, then the first half of the track is where you have got to try and walk around. You'll get some fantastic photo's with a 300mm lens around Redgate and the Craner Curves!

I'll be there from around 10amish. I've not been able to borrow the 300mm so I'm going to use the poverty spec kit lense as best I can :(

Hope to see some of you there :)
