Considering buying Xtorrent? Just a warning: we are changing the license of Transmission, and since Xtorrent uses our whole core engine (a fact the dev doesn't like to share), it might not be getting updated in the near future. I can promise future features such as torrent encryption will be under the new license, so while we update his app will be standing still. I just had an interesting discussion with the developer of that application, and as a team we refuse to write software under a license that lets him charge an ever-increasing price while at the same time treating us with no respect (I have never been talked to in such a disrespectful way). We had hoped our license would allow us to help other projects, but I am disgusted after my discussions with this certain individual. I apologize to the whole development community, but this is a hobby of mine and I didn't sign up for this.

That's surprising. I'd always considered David Watanabe to be quite a good dev. Newsfire is one of the few shareware apps I've ever paid for and Inquisitor is great. I didn't really dig X-Torrent that much (seemed like Transmission was just as good) so I didn't bother with it past the free trial.

One thing still stands with DW though - he's a great UI designer.

So this means Transmission won't be updated for a while?

That sucks.. it has come along very nicely in the last year :(

I Think it's the other way around, Xtorrent uses Transmission as its base, the license for Transmission is changing which means Xtorrent will not be updated but Transmission will be. That's how I read it at least.

Ahhhh right.

Having a "slow day" today, so i'm not suprised if I read it wrong

I don't think so.

DW has been trying to make money off of other peoples work and is renowned for being an ********.

so basically, great UI, average to good software, bad person.

He basically takes freely available code, spends some time wrapping a pretty UI around it, and then charges over the odds for it.

Charging money for file sharing apps in the first place seems like the totally wrong way of trying to make money anyway. It will be interesting to see if Watanabe just goes and finds another open source BitTorrent protocol implementation to wrap a UI around, or actually does some work himself. I'm guessing the former.

Edit: I still want to see chatlogs of the discussion though :)

Is it just a torrent search engine or a torrent client with a built in search engine?

Since you can get free torrent search engine widgets, I don't see why anyone would buy this.

It looks like libtransmission (the backend that XTorrent is using, legally I might add) is going to change from the MIT license, which is a very permissive license and allows anyone to use the code WITHOUT releasing their changes, to the far more restrictive GPL or LGPL license.

GPL will mean that Wanatabe will have to release the entire XTorrent source if he wants to use the improved libtransmission in his code, and LGPL will mean he has to release any changes he makes to libtransmission alone.

If Transmission only had single-file selection then it'd be perfect :)

I see they're adding it, but it couldn't come sooner imo.

Also... check out iconaholics website for a swank set of icons for Transmission..

Comes in White and a rounded bubble variant too! :D

Single file selection is available in the latest nightly builds and works ok, I've been using build 2190 from here http://chucker.mystfans.com/opensource/transmission/ with no real problems. Might be worth checking out if its a feature you need.

as far as features and tracker support goes, I'll stick to Azureus. Transmission and XTorrent and banned from a lot of private trackers, and even though it's sluggish and a memory hog, I'll stick with Azureus until Utorrent goes into public beta - which I hope is very soon
