Afternoon, guys.

I have to decided on something, and not too sure what route to take here..:S

Okay, so I have a Shuttle XPC SN85 G5 V2 system with the following specs:

Windows Vista Ultimate
AMD A64 3400+ (2.4Ghz, Socket 754)
2 x 1GB DDR 400
X1950Pro 512mb (Just bought this two days ago)
2 x 160Gb Seagate Serial ATA drives in a RAID config.
Samsung 16x DVD rw - Lightscribe.

Now, I love this system, does everything I need it to. Have had it for 2 -3 years now though.

Tammy's PC specs, (My girlfriend).

Intel Pentium 4, 478.
1.9Ghz P4 chip. (Motherboard won't support cpu's higher then this**)
40Gb Hard Drive.
Same dvd drive as me.

I have a 3.06Ghz CPU 478 lying around as well. No boards for it though.

Now, I have been offered a really good deal. A 939 motherboard and a cpu that runs at 2.7Ghz. The board has PCI-E as well, as the 939 socket.

So, do I buy it, and build myself another pc and let Tammy use the Shuttle?

Or do I buy it for her, and build her up a PC on that spec?

I just can't let the Shuttle go, love it too much and not sure I can go back to a full tower case again... :(

The other question, do I leave the deal, and find a board to support the 3Ghz cpu for Tammy?

**Is it possible to flash the BIOS of the Tammy's 478 board to support CPUs faster then 1.9Ghz?

Taking your last question first, unlikely I'd say but it depends on the motherboard as the manufacturer might have released a bios flash but you need to check the model number.

How much are you getting the CPU and motherboard for in comparison to the new price? Either in Rand or Pounds would do for the purposes of comparison.

If Tammy has enough Ram and she would be happy with a 3ghz socket 478 chip then a new motherboard is probably the cheapest option. :)

She's got enough RAM in the PC, could always stick another 512mb if need be. Well, I am sure she'll love the 3Ghz CPU, no doubt. But she also want to play Need For Speed. (I am waiting on a AGP card that is capable of this atleast, lol).

I can get the motherboard and Socket 939 CPU 3200+ (Sorry it's a Foxconn NF4 6100K800MA-RS) for about R700 (Which is just about 50 Pounds)

I can't get a new motherboard and cpu for that..939 I mean.

A new motherboard for socket 478 isn't going to be that much cheaper (at least not on the UK prices I've seen, well around £30-40) so I'd suggest going for that CPU and motherboard at R700 then picking up a cheap PCI-E card - any of the NFS series will work well on a 6800series card or an X800series card, both of which should be available at £50 or less easily. :)

So you suggest I buy the board for her and get a 6800Gt or such? And keep my system? Actually, my old man has a spare PCI-E that will play the game easily.

I am correct in saying that the 939 3200+ is faster then my 3400+ 754 at stock speeds, correct?

About on a par is the way I'd put it, the dual channel memory helps a little but there wasn't a huge amount of speed difference from what I remember overall.

If your old man has a suitable PCI-E card going spare then that would do fine, otherwise a 6800GT or similar is a good choice. :)
