Here somewhere!!!
Hi All,

As I have said on an other thread. I am using an old 2006 spec system at the mo due to my laptop going up in smoke so to say.(hence my sig)
I am now putting money aside for a new rig, but I just can't get my head around were to begin  I don't want to rush and buy parts and whack it all together and then think that I should have got a different CPU or GPU etc.
I am an AMD person and have only ever had systems with AMD's, and for some strange reason I just don't know about moving on to Intel  I know from these forums that Intel are kicking AMD's butt at the mo, but I must have some type of mental block when it comes to CPU's.:confused::eek:

Anyway, I don't have a budget as so. I just want to build a good gaming PC without going too mad on price, but I would expect it to give me a good few years of gaming. Is that possible?? Any idea's would be much welcomed. ;):);)

at least have a ball park figure that we can work on. eg someone's "no idea of a budget" may be £500 but AN Other's may be £2000

Hi there,

I know you say you don't have a budget as such, but is there a rough budget you'd like to stick to? It makes it easier to spec. If you're undecided about CPU, here's a handy comparison of two identically priced offerings from Intel and AMD:

http://anandtech.com/bench/product/1289?vs=1261

The Intel chip manages to beat the AMD chip in pretty much every test in the above benchmark, and has considerably lower power draw, meaning you need a less beefy PSU to run the PC, and the Intel chip runs cooler than the AMD one too.

Also, what form factor would you like to go for? Are you happy to have a traditional full-tower case or would you like to go for something smaller?

Anyway, if you're thinking of going Intel, here's a good spec that is going to keep you going for a while but won't break the bank:

YOUR BASKET
1 x Inno3D GeForce GTX 970 OC 4096MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £259.99
1 x Gigabyte Z97X-UD5H-BK Black Edition Intel Z97 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard £179.99
1 x Intel Core i5-4690K 3.50GHz (Devil's Canyon) Socket LGA1150 Processor - Retail £179.99
1 x Kingston HyperX Beast 16GB (2x8GB) PC3-19200C11 2400MHz Dual Channel Kit (HX324C11T3K2/16) £129.95
1 x SuperFlower Leadex GOLD 850W Fully Modular "80 Plus Gold" Power Supply - Black £109.99
1 x Phanteks Enthoo Pro Mid Tower Enthusiast Case with Window £89.99
1 x Crucial MX100 256GB SATA 2.5” 7mm SSD + 9.5mm Adapter (CT256MX100SSD1) £79.99
1 x Seagate Barracuda 2TB 7200RPM SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache - OEM (ST2000DM001) HDD £59.99
1 x Phanteks PH-TC12DX CPU Cooler - Black £44.98
Total : £1,144.45 (includes shipping : £8.00).

If you'd like to keep the budget under £1000, there are ways you can save money here, you could go for a cheaper motherboard for example, and a less expensive graphics card, but at the moment this PC will probably give you the best 'bang for buck'. Obviously, you need to add Windows 8 to this spec and possibly a monitor if you want/need a new one.

Thanx and sorry, it would help things along if I had put a figure.

I was looking at around £1500 or so max, but would be more than happy if it can be done for less? ;):);)

Do you need a monitor as well? The Phanteks I put in the spec above is an excellent case for the money, but if you want a really big tower case, you could look into the Phanteks Enthoo Primo:

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-000-PT&groupid=2362&catid=2674

The Primo is significantly larger and has much better support for liquid cooling. To be honest, it's probably massively overkill for air cooling, so unless you are going to liquid cool or are considering going crazy with components somewhere down the line (things like quad-SLI, loads of HDDs etc), the Enthoo Pro or Enthoo Luxe (a slightly more expensive model based on the same internals as the Pro) will do the job for you.

Now that I am not limited for space, I think a big tower with plenty of scope for future upgrades, and yes I am thinking of water cooling as much as possible. I am not sure of going SLI though, is there a real need for it? I can see the price is going to go sky-high!!! BANG goes getting a newer car next year! It's a good job I'm not married anymore, as the ex would have gone spare!!!!!

Ref Monitor? should I go just monitor or HD TV? and I am thinking about 22"/24" as I am using an acer 19" at the mo and it would be nice to go abit larger. Then again I need everything, as it's a complete setup needed.

Get an Enthoo Primo :D
I got one last Friday and it is amazing!

Set up your trust details too please! (Click "Trust" on the right hand side of your post)

SLI would be useful (probably necessary in fact) if you were thinking of going for a 4K display, but I think it's too early to be considering 4K anyway.

If you'd like a large case with plenty of space for future expansion, and given that you're considering water cooling, I'd recommend the Phanteks Enthoo Primo. It's got rave reviews:

In terms of the monitor vs TV debate, it depends on the TV. Some HDTVs suffer from ghosting and lag, and some can't display as high resolutions as a PC monitor can. So long as your TV is reasonably new and is full 1080p then you should be fine, particularly if you've used it for console gaming and not noticed any lagging/ghosting. If you're interested in a monitor, here are some that are worth considering:

YOUR BASKET
1 x AOC G2460PG 24" Widescreen G-Sync 144Hz 1ms Gaming LED Monitor - Gunmetal £329.99
1 x Samsung S27A850TS 27" Widescreen Ultra Thin LED Professional PLS Monitor - Matte Black £319.99
1 x BenQ XL2430T 24" TRUE 144Hz Widescreen LED Monitor - Black/Red /w Flicker FREE Technology £299.99
1 x BenQ XL2420Z 24" TRUE 144Hz 3D Vision 2.0 Widescreen LED Monitor - Black/Red /w Flicker FREE Technology £289.99
1 x Dell UltraSharp U2414H 24" Widescreen LED Slim Bezel Monitor - Midnight Grey £199.99
Total : £1,479.43 (includes shipping : £32.90).

I've stuck one 27" monitor in there because it is such a bargain at the moment that it is certainly worth considering. You'd get a higher resolution with the 27" Samsung at 2560x1440, it just depends whether you want to get a monitor that big or not.

If not, the BenQ monitors are great gaming monitors, though they are quite pricey for 24" displays. The Dell Ultrasharp is probably more of an all-rounder. It is an IPS panel, meaning it will have better colour reproduction and viewing angles than the BenQ monitors, but it may not be quite so suitable for gaming. That's not to say it will be bad, I've got a Dell Ultrasharp and think it's a great monitor, but it won't have the 1ms response time of the BenQs.

The final option I've put in the basket is a G-sync monitor. If you don't know what that is, it's a new technology from Nvidia that syncs the monitor refresh rate to your GPU, eliminating screen tear and input lag. It's a bit new though and better monitors that support it will likely come out next year. Plus, currently G-sync enabled monitors only have support for one input via Displayport, so you wouldn't be able to connect anything but your PC to a G-sync monitor.

my advice, dont ever look at thing like "im amd or intel". Always look at it "whats better for ME" (what brings more performance for money etc). Companies like amd or intel will not love you, will not reward you for being with them. Its your life, ur game, ur decision. Play for yourself! ;)

Completely agree, I've never really understood company loyalty. Buy the best product, regardless of who makes it.

I can't link baskets as I'm using a different laptop today, but what you want (from the top of my head is):

Intel i7 4790k + Gigabyte Black Bundle
MSI 970
24/27" 1440p Monitor / G-Sync
8GB Teamgroup 2666mhz RAM
256GB MX100 SSD
2TB Seagate HDD
Phanteks Case (Luxe)
If you're thinking WC in the future then a Raijintek air cooler for now
EVGA 750W or Superflower 750W PSU

Good to go, and should be on budget.

Thanx for the advice all,

I know what you are saying makes sense, :o As for the new rig? I am going to mull-over the spec's and see what will be the best option for what I want.

It's just thing's in the desktop world have moved-on so much since I last built one hence the sig!!!!! and I had got used to just using a laptop.

My brother in-law also keeps on telling me to just get a PS4 or an Xbox 1 and save my money, but I have never being one for consoles. I guess I will get xmas out of the way, and then it will be build time!!:D

Once again thanx to you all.;):);)

You want to try living with it! LOL

when I dragged it out of the loft it was like that RSPB advert!!! (If you build it one!!!!) anyway, as I say in my sig it's serving me well for the mo and it's still faster than the notebook I have.

It's just the gaming side of things that is the issue, mind you I can play cod4, crysis etc as well as all my "old" games from back in 2006.

I guess it's not like wine though, as it's not going to get better with age!!! ;):);)
