Don't stick random details into Admiral online quote generators

Well I just had a rather colourfull discussion with an Indian gentleman at Bell's customer services after finding a random payment taken from my bank account.

They thought I had had an accident without notifying them. After finally getting him to give me the specific details it turns out that it was from an online quote I had made a while back which never actually got taken out. what has happend is that I have gone on to fiddle around and get some quotes for mods to my car, and selected the 'I have another car I would like to Insure' option when logging into the online quote tool. As I couldn't remember the exact dates of a couple of notifications of incidents I have given them from the past, I guessed. I clearly guessed one correctly, but the other was wrong. This quote was never actually taken out, I just used it to get some figures and then later phoned up and amended my existing policy.

However, 2 months later, they have somehow found this random date of a claim, assumed it was an incident I haven't told them about, updated my policy, updated the premium, and then debited my card £215, all without any attempt to get in touch with me.

After 20 minutes they have agreed to ammend my policy back, and will be refunding me the money. So a heads up to anyone thinking of using the online tools to get new quote details from your existing insurer, make sure you get the claim dates correct as they are linked to your existing policy!

Oh, and after 20 minutes of a very unhappy Skeeter on the phone, the guy had the cheek to try and sell me breakdown cover! :p

Had Elephant try and do the same thing but at least they had the sense to email me about it first!

A system check of your policy has highlighted that you gave different
claim details when you obtained a quote from Admiral/Bell, prior to taking
out this policy.

Unless we hear from you within the next 7 days, we will assume the above
information is correct and amend your policy details accordingly.

Good!

The less fraud, the less my policy will cost.

Keep up the good work Admiral!

Elephant is part of the Admiral group.

I'm with Elephant and when my policy was up for renewal I got a quote from Admiral and it was cheaper. when I told Elephant I was leaving to go to Admiral they asked for my Admiral ref no and not only matched the quote but bettered it.

Never thought to try Admiral off against Elephant before but my insurance is up for renewal at the end of the month so will be worth a try :D For whatever reason the Admiral group is £800 cheaper for me than any other insurers so I won't be moving anywhere else in a hurry!

Odd, usually they contact you first when they pick up on these things, did you perhaps not receive the letter? Or did they say they hadn't sent one?

I always use the house number a few doors away when I'm massaging the details to get the price down.

If any insurer took that kind of money out of my account without any notification. I would be getting it refunded and cancelling the policy.

I don't like my current insurer as it is though (greenlight). Rip off merchant once they have you by the balls.

I've always found greenlight a very odd company to deal with. Sometimes they'll give me a quote then a different person will say 2 weeks later that they dont insure my postcode, went to buy a policy with them and they wouldn't accept a credit card payment (a few years ago now mind you), tried to put the price up after giving a fixed quote the day before, staff can be very randomly rude etc

Have given up altogether with them now.

I've also had admiral try to charge extra on a policy but for not declaring points - similar situation where I couldn't remember when I had acquired said points and done 2 quotes, with and without before checking and realising they were outside the 5 years. Plicy bought, some time later letter telling me I hadn't declared points and here is the extra, was easy to sort though

Yeah, Greenlight insurance CS ain't the best. I much preferred Adrian flux. Greenlight have a good quote system but sting you for every little change after setting up the policy... Worse one was when I moved into my new house with 2 big drives. I did a load of quotes between specialists from old house to new and everywhere dropped by about £400. Except for Greenlight obviously and I truly believe that is because they have me by the balls already.

Once I have replaced my VXR I very much doubt I'll be staying with Greenlight.

Can't see the viewpoint of celebrating incompetence. Admiral group are doing well to connect the dots they just need to have the foresight to enquire with their customers before this sort of thing ends up on Panorama.

All I know is Mr Smith a few streets over must be having a nightmare trying to insure anything :p

As bad as they are, they are significantly cheaper than anyone else for me. Even with the extra £215 they took from me they would have still been cheaper :p

The guy said I should have been contacted about it, but when I asked for details of how and when he couldn't find any record of it. It was also only a 'notification only' incident that was added with the wrong date in my on line quote, yet they had added it to the policy as a claim.

I'm going to be more careful when making up quotes from now on. I quite often run a few through with mods and things I had planned to make, or added/removed other drivers to see how it affects the price. No idea they linked what you entered in these quotes as factual details against your actual policy!

Raiding existing customers funds without authorisation is good work?

I take it you work in the insurance industry? :D

Only fraud on display is by Admiral in this case :o

Pretty sure you agreed to that happening in the terms and conditions but as demonstrated by another poster, the group do send out emails to warn people. As email is best effort, maybe skeeters got lost? Either way, not fraudulent on the part of Admiral as Skeeter did supply them that info after all.

Also, at me accusing people of fraud. Just lol. My comments are entirely because Admiral prove to be the cheapest year in year out. Long may that continue, especially if that involves catching and punishing scumbags!
