Had been having problems with a new mobo and the SATA sockets on it. So I connected up several drives and booted up. The system had appeared to hang so went to grab a cuppa before doing anything else.

I returned to find windows had booted and check disk was running claiming a drive was corrupt and was happily deleting all the corrupt files on it. Now I was using this drive less than an hour before, so I've no idea what the problem was. The drive was full of documents that I could do with recovering - what are my chances?

The main thing at this point is to not panic. Stop using the drive. Any further activity will reduce the amount of data you can recover. Attach the drive as a slave to a 2nd PC and install a data recovery program. I have only ever used getdataback (which is not free), and with varying degree's of success. It all depends on what process was carried out on the drive after the files are deleted.

I did try a freeware program once called undelete pro, and it was quite good.
Unfortunately I no longer have the application or any links for it. Try download.com if your looking for a freeware package, otherwise try getdataback if you want to pay for it.

Remember, do not panic and stop using the drive except for using recovery software on it.

(as a side issue - your topic header "dont turn your back on windows" is rather a little vague)

Used getdataback and I recovered virtually everything from the disk. Windows would read it saying it wasn't formatted. Excellent!
