Don't understand mouse mat users

Why use a mouse mat? In 99% of cases there is absolutely no need. Especially since the "mouse balls" have become extinct.

When ever I have a mat it's just in the way. Why restrict your whole arm movement and space to a little circle or square?

Never considered wear to the desk. Does it really effect it?
