Glass mats last but have downsides which can be as bad as a mouse not working with them.

Because it's a smooth comfortable surface, that's washable and my picky-ass laser mouse actually reads consistently unlike the surface of my desk?

My grandparents bought me a wireless mouse in summer 1999. Granted it was a PS/2, but going wireless was pretty unusual back then! Best birthday present ever. So that was when I stopped using a mouse mat for my home PC. Don't think I ever used a mouse mat on any of my work machines, although some of my colleagues still use them... plain blue ones from the stationery cupboard.

Might as well as it should be attached to your wrist support which nobody should be using a mouse long term without unless you want to risk messing yourself up.

I couldn't do without my Steelseries gaming surface. Mouse just glides over it like double cream down Holly Willoughby's boobs. Glorious.

I always hold my mouse with a straight wrist so there is absolutely no chance of doing myself any harm. Never understood people who rest their wrists on the desk that must really hurt after a short term. I rest my forearm about half way up on my desk and then it is a straight line from that point to the top of my mouse so no need to move my wrist since I can just move my arm fractionally to move left or right.

I also don't rest my wrists on the desk when I am typing I do the same thing with my forearms there as well.

I use my computer about 10 hours a day every day and I have zero problems with RSI or any other injuries.

My mother is 71 this year. The picture on her mousemat is of a hunky dude in a firefighter outfit. When she uses the mouse, and therefore warms the mat, the fighters clothes disappear.

Whenever she asks for help with her computer, I shudder a little. He's very well endowed. :o

Nice of you to give your mother your old mat :D.

Is wrist support actually reccomended then? I spend an awful lot of time at the pc working/gaming. Is a flat pad a risk?

I did go without a mouse mat for a few months a good few years back but I found it wore down the surface of the albeit cheap desk and the hard surface made my hand sore.

Correct wrist position is the key and a mouse mat with wrist support can drastically improve this. Modern technology is going to ruin our hands and wrists!

A mouse? How quaint :D ;)
