Don't understand mouse mat users

Why use a mouse mat? In 99% of cases there is absolutely no need. Especially since the "mouse balls" have become extinct.

When ever I have a mat it's just in the way. Why restrict your whole arm movement and space to a little circle or square?

(Yes I'm a bit bored)
The desk is uneven, scratchy

Haven't used a mouse mat in 5 years+ - my "desk" is cheapo kitchen worktop and no sign of wear and works fine.

However, I don't play games and can understand that that might need something with a little more finesse than a lump of worktop.

I have a razer sphex, could use the worktop, but I don't, I like the feel of the thin piece of plastic, that little bit of friction against the mouse, makes all the difference to me.

I used to use my desk, and a) it wore away a nice patch of my desk b) I had a little callus on the heel of my palm where it rubbed on the desk.

Just get a massive mousemat and never look back

i used to use me desk, then bought a big chunk of aluminium and cut a nice big mousemat for it. was great at first but an education into the value of anodisation.

eventually after the dust shorted out the sensor in me mouse got a proper alu mat and a master race desk mat, looks and feels real nice.

can't say i'm massively enthused on soft mats, preferr a desk or a hard mat.

Why wear pants if you've got nothing to be ashamed about? Well they're comfortable that's why, keeps the breeze out

I like the massive ones so much, that i got one for work too much to the envy of a few colleagues

That made me laugh, I read it as if you like massive pants - took me three read throughs before I realised you were talking about mouse mats:D

I also hate mouse mats. They attract dirt / crumbs / dust like mad, the edges peel off them, they move about on the desk or the mouse will fall off it... I just use my ikea desk, which has no wear on it at all from the mouse, and the desk bit cost £20 or so... it's a couple of years old, no wear (from the mouse) I can afford to replace it ever 10 years! Sometimes If I'm faffing about in Windows my mouse will be in front of my keyboard centrally (not sure why it ends up like that!). Looking at my mouse the four small feet it has have collected a bit of dust, which I've just brushed off.

Granted, my experience of mouse mats is all from school but... eugh.

Had my Icemat since my LAN gaming days (around the era of Insomnia 18), when you couldn't guarantee that your desk would be flat and level, let alone smooth.

Used it ever since, not replaced it because I don't think there's anything like it (frosted glass).

I have two icemat blues one for each computer. I love it. You dont see them anymore.

I use a mat because it guarantees a clear area on my desk, and one that gives a good surface for the mouse that is easy to clean.
was it an Icemat?
I still use mine extensively as it gives a nice feel for the mouse as long as I remember to wipe it down with glass cleaner every now and then :)

It was. I thought it was stupid purchase at the time at around £40, G5 mouse was about £45 and a £30 keyboard. But they were all worth it. The old Saitek Eclipse still works fine, the G5 has the occasional issue with the scroll wheel but it's solid. The mouse mat, after I patched the mouse was a dream to use.

Had an argument with the wife, slammed the desk in anger and something jumped off the shelf attached to the desk and landed smack bang in the middle of it. :( gutted.

May see if I can find something similar when I've a proper desk again, or maybe look at a custom desk design with glass/perspex top

I'm more accurate on my slightly rough textured Razer Vespula. Plus I don't want to ruin my desk.
