I haven't been up on the PC components for awhile now so need some help.

Dual core is not for me to many bugs in the games i play (mainly running the the unreal engine) so i need to downgrade or w/e so i need some help choosing a CPU i currently have a AMD x2 4400+ and like i say id like to downgrade to a normal single core... the question is what one?

I'm kinda short on cash atm so need something reasonably priced. also if someone could tell the the re-sale price on the 4400+ please thanks.

Well if you get the 3700+ it's the same speed, but you might as well get the fastest single core (if they overclock well)

Don't have problems with gaming. Do you have the CPU driver installed? Any games that seem to have problems have you set affinity to one core for that game?

Dont play that it's mainly Lineage 2 i have problems with, annoying as hell having to restart the comp if the pc decides its had enough. anyway im definetly swapping it out just need to know what CPU to get tbh :S

AMD Athlon 64 4000+ San Diego (Socket 939) - OEM

why are they so cheap lol...

£65 quid.

I guess ill get one of those?

theres a nice Opteron 146 on the bay at the moment that ive heard clocks nicely to 2.8ghz ;) -£40

I've got 2 spare opty's
146
144 used for about 5hours !

Both do 2980mhz, @ 1.45volts on dual sata 2. they'd know doubt do well over 3.0ghz with 1.5 or more.

I'll have to watch the prices as it might me time to unload all my old kit.

errm, that thread you linked to was 2 years old, there were issues at the start. not had any problems at since a few months after the x2's came out.

didn't really have any problems with new games(back then) except bf2 which would disconnect unless on a single core. months later i tried some really old games i had lying around, max payne, and some other crap, then farcry. both ran stupidly fast, its due to an internal timing thing that games don't account for possibility of two cores on one chip, the games won't use a second physical processor but amd/intel chips can switch the thread from one core to another. this caused a timing glitch, this has been fixed. i think there was just a little patch thing you could use, or a driver, been so long since i used it that i can't remember.

had my 3800+ x2 here playing everything up to and including supreme commander with no issues for like 2 years. nothing new i don't think has had issues, only generally really old games. the new UT engine is specifically being mad to take full advantage of dual core cpu's as are most games coming out in the future. going back now, due to a fully and utterly fixable problem is really not a good idea.

i'm assuming you went on the amd forums to search if anyone had the same problems, if you searched for a fix for that problem you'd probably find an almost equally old thread telling you how.

i'd say ,reinstall windows, make sure you know everything you need to, to fix problem before hand and just apply all the stuff at the beginning. sometimes a fresh install after messing around trying to fix something is needed.

dual core issues are years old. I've never had a problem with games and dual core myself.

Just set the app to use 1 core if there's a problem

I see you play Lineage 2  Great game eehhh

Anyway, Im running a x2 4200 and all I have installed is the AMD optimizer, I get no problems with Lineage 2 and have shops running overnight most nights.
Just thought I would throw that in.
There is also a huge thread on the offical forums about running a dual core with Lineage 2. afaik it's just not a problem anymore. Sorry to see you still having issues.

Ye its a great game, been playing it since closed beta, on my 100th character atm LOL i've had so many.

Anyway, i'm gonna try this optimizer (though i have ordered a new cpu) if it does work ill just use the cpu i bought in a new build project.
