i was scrolling through the internet and found a page dicussiing the classics like Doom, Doom 2 etc etc.

I was just wondering if anybody can remember if Doom, Doom 2 etc was playable over a LAN?? :D

Is it any good over a LAN?
What kind of options do you get, Co Op, deathmatch etc etc? :D
Max amount of players?

One of the best games over a LAN. I think it's 16-32 players but I'm not sure. It's been years since I've played it. Think I recall it being simple deathmatch and team deathmatch with a form of coop mode being available but dunno of the player limits in that.

Pretty sure Doom was 4 player only? Co-op was pretty fun though, shame you don't generally get the option in modern games...

Playing Doom after playing modern fps games feels wrong; no jumping or looking up and down (there is a mod of doom which lets you do this i think). Old games are generally best left in the past, going back to them only sullies you memories!!

Pfft.

There's very little currently out that even gets close to Doom in terms of gameplay.

There are many games on my shelf, the new ones get completed once or played a little and left there, but Doom I keep going back to every now and then to complete again.

i remember playing Doom2 over lan at school at lunch when it was raining - happy memories - either that or touching up grils *looks whistful*

I got a lot better at Quake when I started using mouselook. I think it's better than Doom personally, if only because of Quakeworld. I never tried playing Doom over a network tho - I did a couple of times on Kali (anyone remember that?) and it was terrible, but it wasn't Doom's fault.

Quake is probably a more enjoyable game for deathmatch than Doom 2 is/was and didn't need any of this fancy mouselook business either to be good unlike modern games. :)

Things like mouselook and/or protcol support (I think) can be fixed in Doom using a more modern port though.

Yes, you need the IPX protocol installed on all the machines though IIRC

How easy will this be to setup on 3 XP build pcs going through a Belkin router??

Easy - just right-click on the network connection on each PC, click "Properties", click "Install...", select "Protocol" then click "Add", select "NWLink IPX/SPX/Blah blah Compatible Protocol" and click "OK"... It might ask you restart the computer but that should be all.

As noted above - modern Doom2 ports will have TCP/IP support built in and probably run better on XP etc. so it might be worth trying one or two out :)

True but I don't want mouselook on classic games, I used to be better at Quake without mouselook than I was with it although I didn't perhaps make myself very clear before. :)

Gotta agree played this game to death when i was kid, thought i would set it up on a LAN and take my son on :D

Of course, if you have a null modem cable lying around and a couple of computers with serial ports... :D
