Howdy,

Just a quickie, how many of you out there can play Doom 3 (or RoE, that's what I am playing) on 16x Anti Aliasing? I know its higher than what you would ever need, but I get major FPS slow down on that, and just wondered how many others out there got this? Mainly using a 8800 series card?

I get 60 FPS all the time on 4x and 8x (most of the time) but 16x is a killer!

Just curious thats all!

I am using 16xQAA here and my lowest is 30fps but I am running at 1440x900.

Im running it at 1920x1200, I suppose that makes a diff. I just thought my rig would be able to run this better... its not the newest game after all?

Yes even at that res I guess you should be able to run Doom 3 at 16xAA, afterall, I dont think its that impressive really and dont notice much difference from High and Ultra quality.

What other games can you run at 1920x1200 with 16xAA?

I really need to start trying out some of these more interesting modes.

How does it scale? Especially when you enable multi or super-sampling in the transparency AA box..?

Last time I used Super Sampling in a game it was a massive performance hit, havent tried Doom 3 tho, gonna try it now :D

I actually cant think of any other games that allow me to go to 16x tbh? FEAR lets me go to 4x (that runs PERFECTLY on everything high) but all my other games dont go to 16x? Can you think of any, I might have it and give it a try?

You can force 16xAA/AF/QAA with the Nvidia Control Panel.

Damn Doom 3 wont even load for me now :o

Anyone have any idea what this error report means? I wonder if its these 160.03 drivers doing this  Was working ok last night with these drivers, then I enabled 16xQAA and SS and now it never works even with them turned off O_o

i may be wrong, but only having a gig of Ram may not help? :)

Well yea 1GB ram dont help but it should not stop the game from running when it has worked before.

It's because ultra quality needs 500mb of video memory according to John Carmack, with 16xAA adding a good deal more at high-end resolutions.

I get the same amount of lags in 16x in High quality as I do in Ultra quality. Actually doesn't make any difference in performance wise from what I can see?

willhub - I got an error on the game, when I had patched D3 to 1.3.1 and then installed RoE. I had to reinstall the 1.3.1 patch and it all worked again.

Don't think it was the same error as that though, but you can give it a go!

I dont see why the textures in Doom 3 and Quake 4 need 500+ memory, you get better textures in games like F.E.A.R and it dont even need that much video memory :o

Ah great will give it a go, havent bothered to patch Doom 3 :p

Ok, I got it working now, just went back to the 158.22 drivers :)

I just tried it out with 16xQAA/16xAF with Supersampling, sometimes it was well over 60, lowest I got was 35 when I looked up at that hovering thing at the start.

Hmm Doom 3 is capped at 60fps, you shouldn't get more? And if you are getting great FPS, why am I not? interesting, I must investigate!

cheers for checking though, appreciate it!

Yea Doom 3 is capped at 60fps but the cap can be removed, I think the reason its so low for you is because of the such high screen res, just turn the res down to test if it is, also go into the Nvidia Control Panel, then go to Manage 3D Settings, were it says, Multi Display/Mixed GPU Acceleration, change it to Single Display Performance mode, when I had it to Multi Display the game was unplayable.

Does anyone also know how to enable Widescreen res in Doom 3 (1440x900)?

K I will give it ago.

To get widescreen, create a "AutoExec.cfg" file in the "base" directory of Doom 3 with the below contents:

set r_mode -1
set r_aspectratio 2
set r_customwidth 1920
set r_customheight 1200

Thats what I have, and its the only way to get widescreen... but I don't think its proper widescreen. It works nonetheless.

r_mode tells doom its a res that is not selectable, the ration option sets it to 16:10 and the other 2 are self explanatory.

Just to add to the above

r_aspectRatio can be set to 0, 1, or 2 (4:3, 16:9, 16:10)

Yep, I didn;t bother witht hat, cos I didn't think he would be interested in the other ratios... but it was worth pointing out actually :)

It does need that much on Ultra, and more if you start whacking up the AA Quake 4 textures are very high and very nice! Look at the character detail next time you play.
So only 1GB of RAM will be a factor in the lower frame rate
:p
