Hi,

Just for fun I decided to fire up my old copies of Doom 3 and Quake 4. I hadn't played either for some time and now find that although the games load to the menu, I cannot load any saved games or start a new one.

It seems that this is a win 10 issue as everything was fine on win7/8

I haven't tried fiddling with it yet in case there is a simple fix that somebody here might know about.

Would anybody know if there is such a fix?

Failing that I might just put an old copy of win 7 on a spare SSD and run from that, but I would prefer a fix if it is possible.

I would be grateful for any help/suggestions..

Possibly due to read/write permissions on the folders used but not upto speed on the specific problems with these games.

After trying a few older, but in some cases not terribly old, games on my Windows 10 tablet I'm definitely glad I stuck with Windows 7 on my gaming PC - so many needed messing about with compatibility settings, using 3rd party recompiled executables, etc. etc.

Going off on a bit of a tangent, I seem to recall that with the BFG version there's a bug in one of the latter areas where you use an elevator (Delta Labs...not sure what number reference - maybe #1). Multiple saves are the way to avoid this; I'm not certain if it was patched or not, but I don't believe it was.

The above patch is worth trying if you're getting problems/is applicable to your situation.

Despite Windows 10 cocking a lot of older games up, its compatibility troubleshooter is quite good at fixing them again. The only game I’ve needed a patch for so far is Return to Cadtle Wolfenstein out of a dozen or so that I’ve tried.

I’m dying to play Quake 4 again though. Just waiting for a sale price. It must be 10+ years since I last played it.

Oh, thanks. I never really pay much attention to GOG but I'll give them a go. I see they also have Project Eden. That's a blast from the past.
