Doom 3 Widescreen

I have altered my config to give me a higher wide-screen resolution, yet in the options menu in game it still shows a lower res. I "think" my new res has taken. Is there a definite fix for this?

I could never get the wide screen hack to work, or even managed to pull up the cheat console in game.

I believe the options will still show what resolution it was on previously, as I had to use the widescreen option and can't recall it showing anything other that 1028x768 in the options. The same happens with BF2 and 2142, even though I'm playing at 1680x1050 options still say its something lower.
